How's about an FRN Superhawk?

#1

Post by Dr Heelhook »

Might this be a good idea? That flat ground hawkbill blade is so awesome and the handle is also very nice and a lower priced, lightweight version could perhaps be a good way of reaching the people who couldn't afford the original.

This of course begs another question, is it even possible to make a compression lock on an FRN handle? Come to think of it, I've never seen that done before. A G-10 handle version sprint run would also be nice of course.

I'd like to see it! Hopefully they can do a version 2 with some slight ergonomic tweaks coming as well. Something along the lines of the PM1 to PM2 kind of deal. I'm thinking maybe take out the handle bump where it meets the blade. I don't own one so can't saw to what those would be but CQI is always great.

I don't see why it wouldn't be possible for an FRN compression lock. It still would have liners so shouldn't necessarily be an issue. I think I would rather see G-10 though, in different colors.

Sounds too close to the spyderhawk. I also don't know if a comp lock would work with FRN?

The compression lock can work with lined FRN. The problem is large hawkbills just don't sell well.
We would rather be the knife in your pocket, because is "works" better, than the knife in your showcase, because it "looks" better.

And FRN molds are expensive.
So many knives, so few pockets... :)

for me, no thanks, I much prefer G10 to FRN, FRN just doesn't feel as sturdy or quality. That and as Sht said, too close to the spyderhawk.

I would actually welcome an FRN Superhawk  I would want it to be available in Spyderedge however which I think was a serious downfall of the original Superhawk.

Now I will agree with "michaelm" that G-10 handles are much more preferable but if FRN would make one happen easier then I could live with it. As far as big Hawkbills not selling well I heard that the Spyderhawk in H-1 wasn't a bad seller at all.

A lot of folks liked the more conservative design of the Superhawk over the Spyderhawk and I can sort of understand that... > but I would certainly like to see just how the Superhawk would perform in SE.

Hey you can throw my name in the hat on this idea for sure. But I won't object to a G-10 handle either.

I would probably buy any new hawkbill they come out with. I would like to see an FRN version of the Superhawk with nested liners and maybe an open pillar type construction.

As Araneae mentioned, FRN molds are expensive. The only way I could see that happening would be if the SuperLeaf was well enough for Spyderco to decide an FRN version would be worthwhile, and they decided to roll the dice on a SuperHawk version as well. As for me, no interest here. Between the wrong handed lock and the over thick blade, it's just not a design that appeals to me.

I have a few Hawks but never really use them. To be honest the way I sharpen knives isn't very compatible with Hawks. Initially I thought they were a great idea but I can do anything I need to with easier to sharpen designs. Likewise in the same category for me is a knife with a large recurve in the blade. I can sharpen them but it"s a PITA to do it the way I do it.

When it comes to molds I've heard they are well into 5 figures . It would take a large demand to make the investment worthwhile.

Not for me either although due to different reasons.

My coworkers will definitely get me fired if I opened a Superhawk at office. :D Nor can I justify carrying it. I do hope it is reproduced 20-30 years down the line when I retire and get in to gardening. Till then, I will wait patiently.
