Junkyard Gerber find

I went this morning to a few junkyards searching for a dash for my '85 Mustang. No luck. Just as i was walking out of the last yard empty handed, Nature called so i stepped over behind a car and as i looked down, i saw this little guy peaking out from the mud:

Nice size chip taken off the tip, black coating all but gone, pivot rusted so bad it wouldn't close. Poor little guy. So i did what any big hearted knife guy would do...i took him home and nursed him back to health:

Reprofiled the tip, stripped all the black off and spent a good long while fixing that edge. The spine even shows the tell tale signs of baton abuse. This little guy has seen a hard life. My original plan was to polish the whole thing but i kinda like this Ti patina look it has going now. I've never been a huge fan of chisel grinds but i have owned one of these in the past, but it was a combo edge. I really love the simple design of this knife and being a wharnie doesn't hurt.

I gifted that one to a friend of mine who really loved it but lost it...i think this one will be going to him too. One thing i will say about Gerbers...their steel may not hold an edge long but it sure as heck takes a nasty sharp edge.

That cleaned up nicely and good on you for passing it on to a friend that will get good use out of it. :)

Most folks wouldn't have bothered. Glad you did, and rescued the little guy. I have that Gerber model myself. It's a bit underrated.

Put a spine hump and a Spydie hole on it and give it some decent steel and it would be small knife holy grail for me. They did a really good job designing this knife...even after the obvious abuse this knife has seen there is zero play in the pivot, which is pretty amazing since it only has one scale and no liners. Lock up is rock solid.

hey evil,
i've got one of those myself.
had one before with a proton light attached, and gifted it to a friend.
missed it so much that i got another one.
i leave it on the table beside my chair, and use it for all kinds of mundane cutting tasks. it's just convenient and very useful.
the size and shape of the blade makes it easier to do a lot of things that some of my other knives could handle, but just not as well.
nice find and your spa treatment looks good as well!

It's a great little knife. But Gerber borrowed the design from the CRKT Peck, and then made it a bit bigger.

I've done that a few times too. Spend more money in time ( labor) and materials cleaning and sharpening up a knife that's worth less than my "investment". It's relaxing and if you pass them on to someone who needs it it makes it worthwhile in my eyes. :)

Was going to say, looks a lot like my CRKT KISS. Picked it up on the cheap because I liked the unique design. As I used it a little the pocket clip was a tad large for my tastes (guess it doubles as a money clip), the chisel grind DEFINITELY isn't my thing, and the lock is unstable. So it gets a lot of time on the dresser. Still neat to look at though.

No it doesn't use scales...it comes new just as you see it. The tab in the middle acts as a frame lock so you couldn't put a scale on that side. I guess you could put one on the other side if you wanted but that side is pretty much taken up by the clip which runs the length of the knife (the whole thing folded is only about 2.5 inches long).
