My Delica needs a friend..

#1

Post by Chiles »

I'm currently enrolled in an Advanced EMT (AEMT) program to become a firefighter in the near future. My test for EMT-Basic is coming up on April 21st and I was going to reward myself with a new Spydie to accompany my PE Orange Delica.

I'm looking for an SE Salt model, but the problem is which one!?

I'm going to EDC this knife. I'm already EDCing my Delica and it usually is used to cut envelopes, boxes at work, paracord, etc etc. Basic duties really.

I'm thinking either Salt 1, the Tasman, or the Saver Salt.

What do you guys think? This will end up being a primary EDC (and the summer is rolling around, which means aquatic use!)

I don't have any of them, but it seems like the saver salt is designed with rescue folks in mind. But, maybe you guys have dedicated tools for cutting seatbelts and clothing from patients?

Yeah trauma shears are used for that. I debated getting a knife for that purpose but it's easier to replace a $5 pair of blood covered shears than decontaminate a spydie haha.

I voted Salt 1, as that's the knife I'd most want to carry that I don't currently have. I do have a Rescue 79mm in orange. It's in my pocket right now, as a matter of fact. That would be a fine EMT blade, for obvious reasons. But the Salt 1 would be my choice for an H1 blade.

I'm leaning more toward the Salt 1. It's going to be primarily an EDC anyway. And besides, I KNOW I'll end up owning all of them in the future. And as all Spydie owners know, that's the best policy anyway.

I want a Salt 1 as a "summer" knife, for the days when I sweat heavily. I suspect that my VG-10 Delicas and Rescue 79mm, however, will take sweat just fine as long as I wipe them down. So deep down I wonder if I'm spending money on a problem that doesn't really exist.

I have two H1 knives, a Pacific Salt and a Spyderhawk Salt. Both might be a little large for shorts and heavy sweat activities.

I've just about talked myself into just carrying a VG-10 Spyderco for hot summer days and keeping a close eye out for slight rust. If I find any, I'll address it immediately and go ahead and buy a Salt 1. I was even considering carrying a Dragonfly Salt. But the Salt 1 can be had for the same money, and I greatly prefer the Delica/Salt 1 size in a knife.

I say go with the Tasmin Salt. I think it would make a good partner for a Delica.

I would dye it orange so you'll have a matching set.
My favorite Spyderco is the one I'm carrying now :p

Not to mention i'm sure there's a liability issue if you were to accidentally cut someone while cutting their belt off. When it comes to work, i tend to use the tools provided by the employer. I do use my knife at my job, but i take on the responsibility of tending to my own wounds if i cut myself...so if i lay my hand open, no workman's comp claim for me and i'll be paying the bill for stitches.

I've been seriously considering the Tasman Salt, as the hawkblade would prove very useful for day to day tasks.
Thanks, Mike

Exactly. I'll just use department equipment. It looks like the Tasman is getting alot of love but I'm still feelin the salt 1.

I would definitely go with a Salt 1 personally. Its just about perfect size and shape for an EDC blade whereas I think the other two are more specialized. Not that they aren't excellent knives, just not as good all rounders. The Salt 1 can do it all beautifully! Mine never leaves my side :)
