Ordered Sharpmaker

#1

Post by mikeo »

After much research and deliberation, I ordered a Sharpmaker today. I'm anxious to get it and test it out for effectiveness. I must say, the instructions, on youtube, by Sal, are some of the best knife sharpening instructions around. :spyder:

I literally skimmed over the instruction book, grabbed my Pacific Salt, put a shaving edge on the blade, THEN watched the DVD and realized I'd missed a couple "fine details", but was still extremely impressed.

This is a helpful video from jdavis882 on youtube(aka crimsontideshooter on spydie board)

welcome to the world of the Sharpmaker! While you are waiting to get the SM, make sure and pick up a Sharpie to mark the bevels and make sure you are hitting the entire bevel when sharpening the back bevel or micro bevel. i also recommend picking up a good loupe (10x is the norm) to see what you are doing to the bevels at a microscopic level. Those two tools will prove invaluable!

Once you learn the basic method on the Sharpmaker, you will want to take it to the next level and pick up: UF stones for the SM, diamond stones for the SM, and a good strop (i use the "Strop block" from knives plus). I know I always post this picture, but I am still amazed that I did this strictly on the Sharpmaker with the UF stones and finished with my strop :D

Thanks for the advice. I have a sharpie for marking the edge of the blade. Will probably get the UF stones, next month. I also have an 8x loupe for my aging eyes.

Don't forget to break the edges (corners) as Sal describes on the DVD. It'll go much easier if you do.

I just got mine in today and used it on my tenacious first to get the hang of it, and then did my para 2 (which needed it the most) and I am very impressed. So simple and easy to get a sharp edge back on my edc.

I use all my spydies so I figured this was a mandatory buy and I am happy with it so far.

I did not use a sharpie, but I will use it next time. I only used the 40 degree edge...

The 40 deg setting on the SM is garaunteed to get a good edge on almost all new Spyderco's. I got pretty decent edges with the SM out of the box also :) With a good refined technique you can get them razor sharp.

Congrats on the SM's :)

WOW! My Sharpmaker came, in the mail, today. I watched the youtube videos, by Sal, as I was touching up my knife blades. It did a fantastic job, and I fully expect it to get better each time I use it. But, I am stoked. I even touched up my Kershaw Tanto Blur. I like the way it did the serrations, and the tanto point. Of course, none of my knives were very dull, but now they are much sharper.
Thanks, Mike

Just watched the 4 youtube videos of Sal talking about and demoing the Sharpmaker. Great stuff, I seriously want one now. I really didn't realize how versatile that thing was until watching the video. Sal did an excellent job and definitely sold me on the Sharpmaker!
