Why the ATR Is Now My Favorite EDC

#1

Post by spinynorman »

When I first got my all stainless ATR PE, I was embarrassed by the reaction I got from people, who seemed taken aback by its size and "aggressive" appearance, and started to carry just the Caly 3.5 (Super Blue) instead.

When carried in the back pocket though, the Caly 3.5 kept slipping out, and one day I thought I had lost it - it turned up on the seat in my truck. Phew! The Caly 3.5 then went down inside the front pocket, for when I wanted a more civilized looking knife, and the ATR now rides clipped in the back pocket.

The ATR doesn't slip out of the back pocket when sitting or driving; it is undeniably super strong, between its all stainless construction and integral compression lock, yet relatively light due to the holes; it opens effortlessly, and locks like a bank vault; the handle is very ergonomic; and the blade is both strong, easy to sharpen, and a very practical "all purpose" shape. I have really come to appreciate how great it is!

The End. :D

spinynorman,

Congrats on owning such a great knife. I hope this one is resurrected someday as a sprint like the DoDo was.

Congrats on a great knife. The ATR is one of my favorites as well, mine has the Ti handle, though it doesn't get as much pocket time as say my Stretch 2 or Des Horn lately.

I've always wanted an ATR, but never found a decent deal on one. But recently, I traded for an all black PE, and I'm liking it much more than I expected. It's been a welcome addition to the carry rotation for the last few weeks. It's large, but very thin, and rides easily in the pocket. I also like the blade shape, and the frame compression lock is rock solid, yet so simple. I would really like to see more of this lock. The pocket clip is very strong, but the surfaces are smooth enough not to rip up pockets. I really hope they do a sprint so more people will get to enjoy the ATR as much as I am.

I was late to the table on Spydercos so I missed out on the ATR but I am still on the lookout for one. I would love to see a sprint run.

I think OP is just trying to get Taz to comment. (Not that there's anything wrong with that...)

I think what we REALLY need to do is work on a sprint.

Come on Taz, you know that if you held an ATR sprint in the middle of a corn field ballpark, ghosts of knifemakers past would come out to play. :p

I think a smaller, more streamlined ATR would be very nice. About a 3" blade, with the same blade shape and grind. But trimmed down a bit at the end of the handle, and maybe an hourglass clip. That would be a very nice, slim EDC.

My Caly3.5 is better behaving than yours. It never walk away from me. :)
ATR is one of my favorites as well. I would love to see sprint. G10 or even CF instead of SS handle would be great.

I don't think G-10 or CF would work since the handle is the frame, which is why it has to be steel or titanium. Adding scales would make it a totally different knife. The ATR is beautifully simple and minimalistic as it is, which makes it unique.

I think it is common knowledge that I would not protest if there were an ATR sprint of some sort. ;)

There is one on ebay for $200 right now. Would love to see a Ti frame one. It does look simply and elegant.

Thanks for the fine pics WhiteWillie and gbelleh! Hadn't had a chance to post some of mine yet.

If it were issued again, I wouldn't change a thing. If you build it, they will come...

Nice! First ATR I've ever seen.

And this thread is a reminder of why I never carry in my rear pocket. Well, rarely. I've not lost a knife, but I've had wallets and other things "creep" out of my rear pocket.
