A Study In Eye Wear and Self Defense

Everyone has seen the famous scene in one of the series of Godfather movies where the hitman, once checked to have no weapons was allow in to see a Don from a rival family. He used the Don's own eye glasses by removing them from his face and then thrusting them into his throat killing him. I always wondered if that would really work in a pinch...So I decided to test just that. My eyeglass which I have been wearing as reading glasses for the last six years just manage to break a part that won't be repairable. Into the garbage they go, I have replacement pairs....well anyway I remember the movie on the way to the garbage but walked pasted to the frig and took a roast (tomorrows food)out and stabbed it twice wrapping and all , holding it like a kubotan in hammer grip, and striking hard with both ends... Results.....Failure.......Meat 1, Eye Glasses 0

Here are some pics: Because on the final way to the garbage I said wow, this might be a cool object to practice some photography with.

So Bottom Line this test proves, The Walmart's 1.50+ Magnifying glasses MSRP $9.99 does not make a good Defense Tool if the situation should ever arise

DISCLAIMER: Let is be known that no other eye glasses were abused, maimed or killed during the filming of the still shots for this post.

Perhaps the frames in the film were a bit more stout?

They don't make 'em like they used to.

Hmm...tactical eyewear...you could be on to something there :D Glad your test didn't work. Otherwise next thing I know TSA will be confiscating my reading glasses from my carryon.

I have a pair of $32 (with shipping) prescription glasses thay, in an effort to keep costs down, the earpieces are just pieces of molded plastic that fit onto the flat temple part of the frames. They're made of steel and might make a plausible shiv. :D

Pretty sure my Oakley Juliet's (sunglasses) would fare better in this test, they are a titanium alloy, and very stiff.

I'm not going to take them and stab a bit of meat though.

Good to see another option (although a rather poor one) for the tactical toolbox

I would sooner try to use car keys than eyeglasses, but if i had to i'd go for the eyes.

Well that's one less thing on my Self Defense wishlist that I don't have to worry about getting.
Let's see, next on my list, half chewed dog bone.
