Mr. Janich: "De Cuerdas?"

#1

Post by waveman1978 »

Hi, Mr. Janich. I'm a newbie to FMA....I was just looking at the May 2002 issue of "Tactical Knives," where you did a review of a custom folder. I was curious about the pic where your live hand is placed on the back of the blade, caption refers to this as a "De Cuerdas tactic from the Filipino Martial Arts." Could you shed some light on this? What are the applications for this type of technique?

Dear Waveman:

De Cuerdas is the style of eskrima that was the predecessor of Serrada eskrima -- the style from which I derive much of my background in the Filipino arts. The De Cuerdas tactic is a close-range fighting technique that involves supporting the stick (or single-edged knife/machete) just above the weapon hand with the palm of the other hand. When an opponent strikes, you lash out with a block that dissipates the force of his strike before it reaches full extension. From there, you either slide your weapon down his weapon to strike the hand or let your free hand flow into a check while you strike elsewhere with your weapon. It's very tight, fast, and effective.

I hope this explains it. Thanks for your interest.

Stay safe,

De Cuerdas is a major part of the Art of Modern Arnis as well..Professor Presas was a stsaunch believer in DeCuredas blocking - interception.
All blocking intercepting motions are reinforced with the checking hand, to lend support and absord the rebounding energy of the incoming strike and to then move out quickly to cover or Tapi the attacking weapons hand while counterstriking..
Its a medio to corto range conceptual motion..
no need at largo..
I've had to explain this to several custom makers to get them to give me a DeCuerdas edge on the back of my custom knives and swords so I can properly executer my "blocking-interceptions"...

Thanks for the very clear explaination Mr Mike!!!
