Help with Rookie G10 C51FG

#1

Post by Adriaan »

I got my eyes on this knife for a while now. Has anyone some experience with this knife? Could you tell me if it is a good EDC utility knife? Is the blade long enough to do all round utility tasks? Peeling apples, food prep, things that needs a somewhat larger blade.

What i like about the rookie is the VG10 steel, foliage green g10, it's lightweight, small size and design.

Is there something negative about this particular model?

Should i get a spyderco rookie foliage green g10? (I want to use this knife a lot!!!!)

Aside from my annoyance with it's lack of a left hand clip mounting option on an otherwise hand-neutral knife, my general distaste for Spyderco's textured G-10 on purely esthetic grounds, my particular dislike of foliage green G-10 for similar reasons, and my preference for models with a 50/50 choil and a more structured handle, it's a well made, compact 3" folder.

No problem. Glad you understood my point - that just because it's not my "cup of tea" doesn't mean it's not a well made knife which you'd enjoy.

Love the knife. It's like a Dragonfly sized knife with a Delica long blade. Super thin and light.

Critics nitpick it mainly for the color of the G10 and the lack of a "real 4-finger grip" which is only an issue if you have HUGE hands. Still, it's a terrific knife. Did I say thin and small already? :D

The Rookie is a great knife. I have characterized it with the word "streamlined" in other threads. IMHO it is a great EDC. It is very light and slim since it has liner on only one side. And it has one of the best blade to handle ratios around. You get a nice long blade for the length of handle. Partially due to what Deacon points out - there is no choil, but also the tip of the blade goes right to the end of the handle. No wasted space. The only thing I didnt like about mine was that the grind was way off and I had to reprofile it (Im not an expert sharpener, so it took me a long time), but that is just my particular knife.

Go for it it you want any of the characteristics I described above.

I really like mine. Only issue is the small hole makes it not as easy to open as many other spyderco's. Still better than many thumbstud knifes though. The hollow grind doesn't slice like the thin FFG's, but still good enough for an all around knife.

Love my rookie in G-10. I like the streamlined blade shape as a nice contrast to the typical Spyderco leaf shape. I got an aftermarket deep carry clip that I like a lot. There's a thread somewhere about a guy who added this clip and had the blade FFG (which I don't think it needs). A personal favorite. I wish they would re-issue it in FRN, which IMO is the best handle material around, if not necessarily the "coolest".

Edit: Here's the thread.

Loved mine from the start. Love it even more since I replaced the standard clip with a deep pocket carry clip and had Tom Krien give it a FFG treatment. As indicated earlier, it sports a relatively long blade in a very thin and light but still strong handle. Also it's light and thin enough to carry clipless inside of my pockets with annoying me.

I wasn't familiar with this model, so started googling ( then I did an internet search :D ). From what I found, it seems to be discontinued, and listed as "not in stock" everywere I found it listed. I even found an old thread from this forum saying "Wow, I found a site with in-stock rookies" ( or something to that effect). Even You-tube reviews were dated from '08 and '09.
I didn't see it at CS, are you finding them on E-bay ?
Anyway, it IS a sweet looking knife, but I'm wondering what it brings to the table that the Endura doesn't ?

The FG G10 was a sprint run and I was lucky to pick one up when still available back then.

It's much, much, smaller than the Endura. More of an office knife or a gent's knife, and friendlier to NKP.

It has a Delica sized blade in a smaller than Delica package. It has a very thin handle because it only has one liner. The major gripe I hear about it is the clip being a high riding clip.

Paul, I don't know how you can complain about a left handed clip when you say you hate clips. *shrug*

@MIL-DOT ive searched this for you... http://www.countryknives.com/store/search.asp
(type in rookie) I don't know if they still have the rookie model. Ive seen a rookie at a knife store in the netherlands. Ive ordered a volpe (also discontinued) in Germany and i'm still waiting for it to arrive :( What's taking them so long...

Thanks all for your responses. Ive send the shop a mail and told them i'm interested in the rookie :) Iff i should get it, i will post some pics on this forum.

That's really beautiful!

Did you have him put on jimping, which is the only issue I have with mine?

I had a new model rookie but found it not really much of an improvement over the original. The steel is definitely better, but, as has already been noted, neither jimping, choil, or multiple carry options were added to the update. Plus, I'm another one who likes G-10 but dislikes it in foliage green. So I kept my original and sold the sprint. All that said, the Rookie is a very nice knife with a thin and useful blade--kind of a beefy (because of the G-10) gentleman's folder.
