A training knife should have

Training knife should have a well rounded point, If it has a sharp point it's not a training knife it's a live blade.
A training knife should have a well rounded edge. If it doesn't have a WELL rounded edge it's a dull to sharp live blade.
A training knife should have smooth contours it shouldn't have jagged edges or points and spikes sticking out of it, If it does it's not a training knife it's... a dangerous weapon. A training knife should be relatively light it's not a short length of 2x4 it's a training knife. If you stepped across from me with a tool that had a sharp point. a sharp edge. had sharp points sticking out of it. and weighed 2 pounds I'd considered myself facing someone with a deadly weapon and would shut you down accordingly. Because someone is going to get hurt with that thing and it ain't going to be me.

Oh definitely agree with you Amok_Nok. There are a few threads where people have asked for a trainer countepart to knives that Spyderco makes. Invariably suggestions always come to just tape the edge or just dull the knife. Huh, bad idea.

Awesome words amok nok, "I'd considered myself facing someone with a deadly weapon and would shut you down accordingly". Very well said.

I would think anything with a heavy dense blade, even flat as you said, would do massive damage at speed. Technique is one thing but at speed you could bruise/break bones.

The Temp1 trainer is a weapon in it's own right, rofl. :D

If you are handy with tools, and have some experience making knives, it would not be too hard to make a training blade for an existing knife. If you are serious about using a knife for SD, but a trainer is not offered, a good machinist could probably whip one up for a fee.

Training knives are for sissies. A Mall Ninja Grand Master once blogged that "Real bad-asses use real knives." :p Just kidding, , , saw your comment Chuck and couldn't resist. In reality, I always say there's a fine line between hard-core and stupid. Taping or dulling the edge to make a training aid doesn't just cross the line, ,it jumps way over.

Hehehe, as mentioned you'd still be facing a knife, albeit a dull one, but still a real knife.

This might not sound right... but trainers for the whole do not instill fear in your training partner....when training new students I rub their trainers in doggie doo
Seems to make it more realistic...nobody wants dogie doo on their clothes or body....smelly...but it works....LOL...Doc :D

It really depends on how you are training. i always say I can tell how a person trains by the training knife he carries. I your just waving your knife in the air or working with a compliant training partner pulling you strikes and not making contact you may get away with that risky training blade or toilet paper tube. But the tool you are using it dictating your level of training and most likely fostering bad habits.

If you are working force on force with unpredictable striking and letting your partner counter if he can that pointed sharp edge blade will eventually bit someone.

I believe in the right tool for the job accessing a drone is the best way to go. Controled strips and disarms aluminum gives you the feel. For force on force random I want a blade that I can hit him anywhere with he won't like it but it won't split his skin or chip his bone.

Same with the guys that use aluminum and then pad all up. When you watch them fight they crash in and take chances they would never have the balls to take if they had the fear of getting a Nok trainer smashed into their face. And they are fosting bad habits if they arn't willing to fight that way when a live blade is involed on the street.

Lmao. Doc are you serious. I'm dieing. But at the same time I fully understand what you mean. They will try to avoid the doo trainer but the regular trainer isn't as serious. If it hits them ohh well but not many guys wanna get smeared with feces. Of course when adrenaline starts pumping the way you do things changes drastically. Even to the point of pure reaction which is where the true strength lies. But we do have to start somewhere when it comes to training. Some people have more of an imagination than others but I guess if they don't there's always the doo

I agree with you on that point nok. When there's no fear people will develop stupid habits. The man who charges into his opponents knife is surely not the brightest. Bad habits develop through bad training and what you practice will become what you do.

And the thing is you feel like you are training hard doing your best but again your tool is dictating your training. I see this with girls that train. Guys( for the most part) don't want to smash them in the face or stab in the tits or crotch so they end up striking only to the stomach and arms. total unrealistic to what they will face on the street.

I've seen many times over how introducing an electronic knife into the equation (albeit pricy) really gets peoples' attention. I know I hate getting zapped by one.

I've heard people using cheap stun guns too. About the only useful thing you can do with $30 POS I guess :) .

Or you just add the line, "It's ok, I'm a professional", I do this for a living.

you can also put greasepaint on all major live surfaces (blade, pommel if there is one, knuckles and knife edge of hand, elbow, etc) and the person who has less black (or white, I am not a greasepaint bigot) or less in more vital areas like neck and major nerve and circulatory winners is the victor for that particular sparring match.

agreed you don't want much of an edge particularly for full-speed drills, but you must get the ergos of blade impact point to grip (as far as blade angle/etc) pretty close, or you are training to fight people with trainers, not to defend yourself with escalated lethal force.
