Awesome tool for touchups and maintenance. It's not my first choice for reprofiling, but I use it more than all my other sharpeners combined.
On order: Maxamet Native 5
Current pocket hog: S90V Para2

Tossed out most of my other sharpners after using the sharpmaker. It's now the only one I use. Also got the Diamond stones for it.

I use a Sharpmaker.
One on the bay for less than a $50 bill.
Yet another, 203, I believe, under $10 so far.
Just as good for most chores. :D

By far the best 'bang for your buck' in sharpening systems today. If you get one, make sure you spend the extra coin for the diamond rods so you can bring out the best in even the most jacked up blades.

+1 on awesomeness of the SharpMaker
+1 on the diamond rods.

Sharpmaker is the best $50 I ever spent. I use it for six years for all my needs, including reprofiling and repair. I have no knowledge about diamond rods, I never had them. For big jobs I use congress stones with SM, they few times less expensive.

What they said. I don't remember where I got mine. Maybe do some googling and check different online knife stores. The 204 sharpmaker comes with a pair of medium and pair of fine stones. I would also recommend getting a pair of diamond and a pair of ultra fine. The diamond are great for re-working an older or really dull blade and hte ultra fine are great for putting the super sharp edge to any blade. YOu can also sharpen other edge tools, not just knives.

Just get it, you won't regret it.

You guys are killing me. I've been using a Gatco Edgemate for quite a while and it's so damned frustrating not to be able to get the angles I want because of it's design. Makes me end up using the hones freehand which kind of defeats the purpose.

All this Sharpmaker praise looks like it's going to cost me some coin. :D

Actually I have just used it to touch up my MT11P with Halpern scales.

I love it, it is without a doubt one of the biggest teachers for myself, It keeps things simple and is an easy package to travel with- at the moment mine is in Kandahar with me,( just gave the triangle rods a wash too) I started with it- touching up my kitchen knives and EDC, now it is a companion, as with all the restrictions in Dubai, you cannot always travel with your toys, but my sharpmaker goes with, and I just order my knives online.
My point is, the Sharpmaker is my first traveling companion, then the knife.

Greatest value sharpener out there in my opinion, and makes work a doddle.

cheers,
Guy

Get the SM and the diamond rods, you will not regret it.

I may never learn how to sharpen freehand properly, but I keep my knives sharp with the Sharpmaker.

Also, keep in mind that the extra diamond rods are usually sold/priced as a pair, while the ultra fine rods are sold/priced as EACH

I recommend it, it's all I have/use at the moment and can get very sharp edges in only a few minutes time. Also pick up the ultra fine rods to get a finer edge/polish.

amazon has a nice price on the set.

I hope this isn't thread hijack, but can anybody advise appropriate dimensions for a leather strop? I'm torn between buying or making. Widths seem to range from 1.5" to 3" and lengths from 6" to >20". I'd just as soon buy a small one (cheaper and easier to store) but wonder if I'd miss having more room to work. Any input?

For reprofiling, diamond benchstones, to maintain = Sharpmaker.

The Sharpmaker was my first foray into sharpening in over 30 years and really helped a bunch getting some decent edges off the bat. Now after over 2 years it's my touch up tool after the angles have been set and the edges have been overstropped. I would recomend it to anyone. The UF stones are a nice precursor to stropping.

I would highly recomend the SM as well :)

I recently purchased a sharpmaker. I am new to it and still trying to get the hang of things. I plan to pickup the diamond rods also. I have a set of nice kitchen knives that we failed to maintain properly. I have put them through the sharpmaker a few times. It helps, but I think the diamond rods will put them back to a better edge.
