Just a LITTLE idea...

So i just got on the forums to post pictures of my dyed delica (btw, great job with the FFG colors, spyderco - a fresh look was just nice for my knife IMO) and i noticed the USN catcherman knife. At first, i was enamoured with it, but i was quickly turned off by the molded clip (though i understand the reasoning behind it), the combo edge, and the size.

This brought me back to a long-standing frustration of mine with knife companies: for some reason, coated-black blades on knives that are normally satin almost always come in a combo edge. How frustrating. I love the DLC on my Pacific Salt, and i mean LOVE it. I love the function of it to reduce wear/rust (though not really on the H1), i love the look of it...especially when it gets used a lot, the worn matte finish looks awesome.

So i thought, what if spyderco made a Delica/Endura line, with a PLAIN EDGE black blade, black hardware, and the neon handle like the USN has? That would be an equally cool knife that's function for EDC. It could be a saber grind or FFG - i can tell you what, i wouldn't buy one, i would buy four. Who's with me?

FWIW, the reason for black coated blades is light discipline, not rust resistance. Blades can rust through and under the coatings. As for the rest, lime green has never been that popular outside of the USN so the question for Spyderco would be whether there at least 599 other people who share your desire for that combination of characteristics.

deacon,
thanks for the info. I had always thought that black coated blades had the extra bonus of providing rust resistance - but perhaps that's just Teflon, or my imagination altogether. I suppose the reason i put up this thread would be to see who else liked that idea :)

I love toxic green, but would rather it stay reserved for the USN, personally.

The coating does add some protection, but it's not a substitute for taking care of your knives. It also doesn't protect the edge which in my understanding is the most susceptible anyway.

I also don't like the moldered clip but since FRN molds are so expensive, they couldn't change it.

Oh, and welcome :)

If it were black and orange, I'd be all over it.

thanks jossta! :)

and gbelleh: I also think that black and orange would be awesome. pretty much any neon color, blue yellow etc. Spyderco just released orange-handled delicas/enduras; why not throw a black blade on there?

I also wonder why the black endura and delica 4 plus black native blades only come combo edge.

honestly, the colored handles would really just be a plus.
i'd buy an all-black plain edge delica.
but like i said, since Spyderco is already manufacturing orange handles, why not throw a black PE on there?

I only like PE knives and wanted a orange Delica so I set out to make my own. I bought a white FRN Delica and dyed it orange. The dye job went well. Then I got an all black Delica that was only available with a CE blade as no black PE blade is available. Did the full swap including hardware. I decided that I could live with a CE blade but my preference is PE.

Seriously!! I'd be carrying it on me today for Halloween! Love the look of the blacked out blade and hardware on orange scales. I'm not a huge fan of the the combo blades personally..
