The only Doobies song from the Michael McDonald era I liked much was What a Fool Believes, and that's mostly for nostalgic reasons. The first time I heard it was in Virginia, during my only trip to the eastern US with a combined high school group, in April 1979. Back then, local high schools used to offer an annual 2-week trip to the east coast (starting in Virginia and ending in Massachusetts). I'm glad I took that opportunity, because otherwise I've never been further east than eastern Arizona. So that's what the song 'What a Fool Believes' represents to me.
But overall, when McDonald took over, the whole style of the Doobies became more 'blue-eyed soul.' And while I like soul music, to me, the Doobies were mostly a rock band.

McDonald has a great voice don’t get me wrong , I don’t totally dislike the direction they took . It definitely made them richer . Reminds me of Jefferson Airplane going Starship . Can’t blame them to make a bigger profit in sales .

Great band ! I never got to see them play but did see John Fogerty solo Outfield concert . It was great , he played a quota shaped like a baseball bat . Sadly he was in litigation with other members of band and did not play one old song in the concert which was a bit of a downer . Dan

Dan, I had read about the falling out between the Fogerty brothers, and the litigation between Fogerty and the others. It’s unfortunate, really.

Re: What are you listening to?
I've always liked this song, for some reason.
One thing I've noticed about a lot of '80s music videos is that at some point in the video, a lot of them had the singer's open their eyes wide and roll them to the side, or look from one side to the other while facing the camera, like the driver does at around 0:56 of this video. I've seen performers do that in LOTS of music videos from that era. Why? The performers were obviously told to do it. Even Susanna Hoffs (my '80s crush) did it in at least one Bangles video. Was it 'a thing' back then? Was it supposed to be sultry? Was it some secret 'mind control' symbol or cue? I dunno...

Wishbone Ash had two lead guitar players , Turner and Powell . I saw them in concert and they were awesome. They have been compared to Paige and Beck when they played together . You might find this of interest . Dan

Pretty mellow song for my standards that I hadn't heard in a long time, that I always liked. This band consists of 2 of the 3 members of Blink 182, when the band originally broke up and Mark and Tom wanted to do their own thing. Tom and Travis Barker are in this band.

I'm ashamed to say that I hadn't heard of Wishbone Ash before, so I listened to the album.on youtube, and it's excellent. Thanks for the recommendation, Dan.

David Gates of Bread had one of the most effortlessly soulful singing voices. I'd put him almost up there with Karen Carpenter. He's in his 80s now.
