My new Chicago legal knife

#1

Post by JLS »

I'm heading to Chicago for a trade show soon and decided to get a new knife for the occasion since most of mine are much larger than a 2.5" blade. After looking at the options, I decided to go with a Persistance. I know, I know...it has a 2.75" blade. In this case it had a 2.75" blade and now wears a 2 7/16" blade, courtesy of my grinder. I'm quite happy with the hybrid, as it gives me a big enough handle to hang onto while having a legal blade length. And since it didn't cost big money, I didn't mind modifying it.

You're right, I should've done a before and after. Hindsight bites me again... What it did was turn it from a drop point into a leaf blade.

Everything I've seen says Chicago limits at 2.5". The Spyderco Chicago model is overly compliant, but considering how they were treated by ICE, I don't blame them for being cautious.

If I had another go at it, I might even get a Tenacious as a starting point, but that would be a lot more work. As it stands, this will probably become a loaner/demonstator for convincing people of the utility of a good knife.

chicago need a regime change. i live in s.c. here the police have no issues with my carrying a spyderhawk or chinook. every time i see a car from the n.e. or some other liberal place i think "here is one more liberal who will try to ruin s.c." i know this is judgmental but it is how i feel.

Thanks Jazz. Coming from you, that's a nice compliment.

Whitecloud, I hear you. It makes me glad I live in Utah, where I can carry whatever I please. I actually have to think about what knife I'm going to carry when I go elsewhere. For somewhere like Chicago, I don't have anything under 2.5" with a full-sized handle, so I had to do something about that situation. :D

I'll be looking forward to getting back home and placing my Military or Para 2 back in my pocket and a Mule on my belt.

Looks good :)

But I think the Ambitious already comes this size. Or is the Ambitious too small?

The Ambitious is too small of a handle for my fat hands. So for me it was worth the effort to do the gentle grinding with a nice tub of water on the side.

Spyderco has a nice selection of sub 2.5" blades, but none with a handle big enough, especially at a low enough price that I can buy it for this trip and not use it much after. I I considered a ZDP Dragonfly or a Cat, but at that point I'd be spending some decent money on a knife. $25 shipped is pretty easy to swallow.

Very Nice job on the Persistence. Now you can do some modifying on some higher $ blades.
