Thanks To Firefighters And Remembering Them This Weekend

I had to share this story...

Tonight the fire alarms again went off in my apartment complex. They were going off on at least the 6th and 7th floors as I went down the stairs. You know that smell you get when you're cooking with oil? Well, that's the smell that filled my floor.

For this incident, the apartment management staff was on the ball shooing people wandering into the lobby out the door. A fire engine from the county arrived promptly and two firefighters went into the building. I looked around and noticed everyone anxious or impatient to go back inside. A couple of people would check out the fire truck from time to time, but no one gave any notice to the driver.

So, I walked over to the driver's side of the truck and thanked him for coming out. When we were cleared to go back in, everyone pretty much walked by the firemen without giving them a second thought... wonder if they realize that tomorrow is 9/11.

I made it a point to stick around until I was able to thank all three firefighters for coming out tonight and told them we'd be thinking about them tomorrow. They all thanked me with one responding that he hoped for a quiet day tomorrow. I was pleased that at least a few people thanked the fire truck driver as he reset the elevators to normal operation.

Let's all hope for a quiet day tomorrow and everyday, yet never let up on our vigilance and never forget the firefighters, law enforcement personnel, emergency responders, innocent victims in the air or in and around the World Trade Center and Pentagon that day, and the military men and women on the front lines, who've lost their lives on 9/11 and since.

Thanks for that story Water Bug. I'm glad you took the time to talk to the guys. I'm not sure I would have thought about them like you did. Maybe I would have since this weekend is the aniversary of such a terrible day and it makes me a little sad that I take so many people for granted. I can't imagine firefighters wanting to do that job unless at least a small part of their personality wants to help people. I don't think they do it for the money because I don't know what their salary is but I doubt if it is that high. I've never seen a firefighter on the cover of forbes or buy a yacht.

There are a couple of rescue workers on this forum. Thank you guys.

That is a great story water bug. Thank you. Im a volunteer and 99% of the time people dont give a ****. No thank you no nothing...**** sometimes they feel inconvienced. Also since we live on the border of the FDNY territory, many people in our town think we are payed, when that is not the case. Im taking my own time, driving to the firehouse in my personal vehicle, putting my health and well-being on the line, without recieving a dime. So when someone actually does say thank you...it means a lot.
