You know you're cut good...
When it doesn't hurt. I just nipped the tip of my left middle finger somehow, i don't even know what i did. I just sharpened my Para 2 the other day and it was TP slicing sharp, and just now i was opening it with my left hand and somehow nipped the tip of my finger. I felt the blade hit my finger but it didn't hurt at all...so i look at my finger and it's laid open pretty good. I don't think i need stitches though. It's funny how years and years of playing with sharp objects and you can still screw up so easy.

while my knife wasn't super sharp or had a thin edge. I was able to nearly slice a good portion of the tip off my index finger. the cut must have went half way through starting at the top just where the nail ends and to the bone, if it extends that far out to the tip.
sure it didn't hurt much. but, nothing really ever hurts me very much. I have a natural numbness to pain.
luckily it healed well and I didn't lose much meat. :)
tip: don't apply pressure towards the edge when cleaning out the pivot of your knife with a paper towel...you just might slip.

before i start i would like to say i have many stories to tell but i will tell 3
while it wasnt a knife related accident i got a nice gash on my leg. here goes: so im at the zoo with my brother, mom, brothers friend and little sister. we are walking on a stone path and my brothers friends sister is walking in front of me. she is around 3 so anything shiny gets her attention. she decides to kneel down and pick up a quarter. i of course was not paying attention and at the last moment i saw her and instead of running into her i decided to try to dive over her (stupid yes). anyway i dive over her and land on my right leg and the next thing i know blood is going down my leg and there is a big gash about 2 inches long. anyways it didnt really hurt and we just slapped a bandaid over it and kept going. 10 minutes later and 5 bandaids we decide to leave. when we get home i realize that its actually deeper than i thought (gash) and ask my mom what to do. she looks at it gets some hydrogen peroxide and poured it in. know THAT hurt. i ask if i need stiches (which i probubly did(yes i dont know how to spell probubly) ) and she says nah ull be fine. anyways it took around 2 weeks to heal and im left with a nice big scar. FIN
oh also this next one isnt about cutting but about 2 months ago i was melting the edge of a piece of paracord when something got my attention and i jerked around. the paracord was hot enough to melt and the movement made it drip onto my thumb. left a nice circle. i would estimate it went around 3 or 4 layers deep. didnt hurt since the nerves got burnt and the cappilaries got singed so no blood. that one took about a month of daily cleaning and sterilizing to heal. again nice scar
last story: ok so im about 5 or 6 me and my dad set up ropes around my parents canopy bed and we put a sheet over it to play "tent". so the next day the sheets are down but the ropes are still up. the ropes were that kinda material that gives u really bad ropeburn. anyway i was climbing on the bed and i decided to jump down. so i jumped down and my neck slid against the rope and i got ropeburn on my neck bad. that one hurt
ok now im done

I was on the phone with my Grandma and playing with my tenacious at the same time. I ended up closing it on my middle finger, slicing off the tip of it. I didn't want to make my grandmother worry, so i continued with my conversation, mean while my hand is covered in blood. That was fun.
Another incident, I was using my Kabar, to stab a tin box (just messing around, probably a stupid thing to do). I ended up catching the rounded corner of the box, and the Kabar slipped of and sliced the top of my thumb pretty good. It took about 20 minutes of constant pressure to stop the bleeding.
But yea, I agree with Golddot, I have been cut at least once by each of knives.

They make this elastic bandaging material called Koban that is very helpful for applying pressure to knife lacerations. First you apply gauze or whatever and then strap it on with the Koban. I first became acquainted with it when getting stitches in the ER for a knife cut. It worked so well that I got some to keep around the house for future knife cuts. It's come in handy several times since.

Ever since I had a dumb moment with a Leatherman that cut deeply into the tip of a thumb, a piece of me goes on alert whenever a sharp blade is out. A nice sharp blade plus a little too much force could equal a digit amptutation

Yea I have some stuff similar to that, I am not sure what it's called. I have had a history of stupid-azzed stuff that has happened to me, so I need to keep a small pharmacy of stuff close.mongatu wrote:They make this elastic bandaging material called Koban that is very helpful for applying pressure to knife lacerations. What kind? I've always thought of doing this, but it didn't seem very sterile, and plus how the glue reaction produces heat...Evil D wrote:I always just use superglue. Squeeze the cut shut and put a little glue over it and you're all set. It helps if you can stop the bleeding before you glue it shut though or it'll blood blister. This one is already shut for the most part on its own, might not have been as bad as i thought.
Oh, and just last week I got myself a nasty cut from my endura. Worst cut so far. It starts halfway along the middle bone of my left index, makes a slight curve down and up to end up right at my fingernail. Quarter inch deep, bled like crazy, and since I'm squeamish about stitches/needles, I just used some iodine, gauze, and butterfly bandaids. And so I can say I've never needed stitches.
Only problem is, now I can't unbend my finger to perfectly straight, the skin around feels too tight... it's gonna heal right?
I was about ten years old when I was given my first Swiss Army Knife. It felt so cool with all these shiny tools : blades, screwdrivers, saw, scissors, magnifying glass, fish scaler (who uses these, BTW ?), file - you name it.
What more could a boy want ? Well... stitches and bandages come to mind.
I opened all the tools at the same time (I know...), which of course made the knife very difficult to handle. So, I naturally cut one of my fingers, dropped the knife... and instinctively grabbed it before it reached the ground (having quick reflexes sometimes just means you act before you think, while you should have done it the other way around).
That was the first (and only) time I could see one of my own bones (X-Rays don't count).
I still have the scar... and still have the SAK, too!
As for Spydercos, only a few minor bites so far, mostly while opening/closing them a bit too carelessly. Nothing really serious, and I certainly intend to keep it that way.

What the heck, no pics  :p
Hate you got cut, and hope it heals fast.
Long ago I worked several years as a butcher, and had a game processing buisness during hunting season. I cut myself bad enough to get stiches at least 10 times from work. Odd thing is I've cut myself almost as much just playing with knives at home over the past 40 years. While at home I take it for granted I guess and wind up cutting myself in some very stupid ways :o

One time I'd just finished sharpening & stropping my knife and I decided to give it a test by shaving some hairs off my lower leg (as you do  ... come on, we've all done it! :D ). I got distracted by something on TV and I remember thinking ... "Why isn't the knife moving forward any more?" ... when I looked down I realised why ... oops, almost down to the bone ... well, the knife was certainly sharp enough - didn't feel a thing! :p
Drenching it with wound wash and then strapping a tight plaster over the top had it fixed in a couple of weeks :D

My spydies: Squeak, Tenacious, Terzuola, D'Allara, UKPK CF peel-ply pre-production, UKPK CF smooth pre-production, UKPK G10 orange leaf-blade, UKPK FRN grey drop-point, UKPK FRN maroon leaf-blade, Bug ... all PE blades :)
Well i guess you've found the ultimate test for knife sharpness :p . I hope it heals fast!
I've used superglue a couple of times but I've never been too satisfied with the results. I really don't recommend it as some glues produce quite a bit of heat as they cure. Also, if you don't clean it out completely you just seal all the bad stuff in, and then it hurts even more when you try to get the glue off. A better alternative would be Steri-Strips (more commonly known as butterfly bandages), or getting appropriate medical attention. But if you do end up doing that anyways, against medical advice, it's much better to make little "stitches" with the glue rather then covering the whole thing. It will allow for better movement (without cracking) and won't completely enclose the wound so you can still somewhat clean it. Again though, ER's use normal stitches most of the time for a reason.Evil D wrote:I always just use superglue. Squeeze the cut shut and put a little glue over it and you're all set. Every different company has their own proprietary name. you might be thinking of "Kerlix bandages". Pretty much any roll of gauze and a couple of 4"x4" (or 2"x2") gauze pads will work fantastically. If you're short-budgeted or in a bind, Sanitary napkins work well in place of gauze (a little old school trick I picked up working as a Ski Patroler)BAL wrote:Yea I have some stuff similar to that, I am not sure what it's called...
