Would You Be Interested: Caly3 or Caly3.5 in FRN?

Curious what people think of the Calypso Jr making a comeback in it's evolved form. I do think with the modern ergonomics, nestled liners, and bi-directional FRN it could be a good seller.

Not sure if it would nibble at the heels of the Delica for market-share or appeal to a different audience.

Thoughts?

I would leave as is. I have all Caly3/3.5 variants and do not need the same knives with FRN handles. I really do not like texture, even fishscales. Unless this knife will have screw contraction, which is per my understanding is not possible. I really do not see much sense to invest a lot of money in the mold to have one model compete with other. But this is just me

I would love to see a Caly FRN version ONLY if it's made in Golden. I want to experience some US steels on the Caly platform.

Need a third option....I don't own or even like the Delica, and I don't want a Caly in FRN.

It would be interesting for sure. I think at least a sprint of the old-school ones in a different steel would be very nice.

Yea I guess the Caly series really is designed for Afi's. Those people spring for more expensive options.

I wouldn't mind seeing another Caly Jr sprint either :)

I preferred the original FRN model the most and a reincarnation with the same mold would be most attractive to me (hint: not cf :p ), no preference on steel

p.s. micarta is always welcome

Sal has said there's no reason to bring back the Caly Jr since the Caly3 is a more refined version of that knife, but you guys might get your wish in some form:

However, our Sles manager, Kelly, is thinking to make a micarta calypso jr.

I'm up for the 3.5/VG-10/wire clip. Keep it under 65-70 bucks and I'm sold.

You know...once they have a mold the next step might be a H1 model :) . Make it linerless and pinned if you want. I don't care :p .

I didn't vote because the Delica is not my cup of tea.

However, I'd be more inclined to suggest Spyderco consider an FRN Chaparral than an FRN Caly 3. The Chaparral only gives up 1/8" blade length, is even more compact in the pocket, slices magnificently, and has equally good ergos, some might even say better due to its deeper choil. If that's not enough, it also would open up all kinds of interesting possibilities for the steel affis that are off the table for models made in Japan.

In the 3.5" class I favor the Stretch over the Caly 3.5, mostly due to ergos, so I'd rather see a leaf bladed version of it. Imagine there'd be less risk in that than for Spyderco than investing in an FRN mold. I will concede that there may be an audience for an FRN version of the Caly 3.5

Nope, I have lost my interest in FRN and have both Caly's already.
I love the liner-G10/CF stuff!

I know I'm in the minority but I prefer FRN over G-10 or any other handle material. Its plenty tough enough for whatever I'm going to do with a pocketknife and easy to clean. I love the feel of the UKPK FRN with the leaf shaped blade. Adding a mid lock would make it perfect for me as a dressier carry knife. I say this because I like the feel of the Dragonfly 2 but just wish it was a bit larger like the Caly series.

I'm with Wdr65 and typically prefer FRN over G10. I have a both an FRN Delica and a Caly 3.5. If the 3.5 had been available in FRN, I almost certainly would have chosen that over G10.

The new Caly I'd be most likely to buy would be FRN Caly3 with one of the Carpenter steels. The micarta Caly Jr mentioned above might be interesting too.

I will always love the Bi-directional FRN more than the G10 for one reason: VALUE

I have a Caly3CF and love it, but my first spydie was the blue FRN Delica 4 and I will always beg Sal and those at Spyderco for a line of Dragonflies in the same FRN colors as the Delica 4 series.

The same thing goes for the Caly3. The blue and green FRN they use on the Delica/Endura4 line is particularly vivid and beautiful... and cost effective. I would happily buy a Caly3 in every color they would be willing to make as long as it was a sub-$70 knife in VG10 or another steel of that value.

I am always more willing to thrash a FRN knife. Seems ridiculous considering the strength of G10, but cost is a factor I always consider when beating on my blades.

That doesn't mean I don't use my G10 blades. They all get a run for their money, but i'll try cutting down a tree with my FRN Delica without concern.

I'm with you guys. I think FRN is more comfortable in hand and slides in/out of the pocket better. In the end I'm about value. G10, CF and Ti knives are awesome but I like my $70-90 users more than the $120-170 ones. They make more sense if choosing a tool for a day of work.

Shrug.

I think I'd be more interested in an FRN 3.5 if it could be done as a Salt model. The flat ground blade would be out since H1 doesn't swing that way and there would need to be some other tweaks, but I'd be curious to see what they could pull off if they tried it.

Nothing against FRN at all - in fact I like it and have a D'fly and a coupe of Delica4s

What I'd like to see is the Caly3.5 as sprint runs in a few shades of G10 and a few other steels. I have the supendously good VG10 version, but the SuperBlue doesn't really appeal

I can imagine myself actually crying if a ZDP189 one came out and I missed it for some reason. A blue handle would be very interesting

Don't get me wrong I adore the Stretch, but I think the Caly3.5 a considerably better designed knife, and definitely with more of the old soul to it :)

I don't need an FRN Caly 3 or 3.5. I've got three FRN Caly Jr.s already - and am looking forward to the upcoming sprint run.

And the UKPK FRN models sit in this space as well - albeit without locks.
