orange scales for manix 2?

#1

Post by Rotten »

This is probably a repost and I'm sorry if it is. I know Spyderco did a sprint run with orange scales but does anyone know where I could buy just the scales pre-made? Does Spederco sell them or does anyone know of a good pimper who makes them? I'd prefer to get them pre-made rather than send the blade in for a custom fit but i am open to all suggestions.

Thanks,
Lon.

I saw a video once about new scales for a Manix2. I emailed to get a price and he said he charges $80 for a set of G-10 scales. The ones in the video really looked good. The person definately had skill and tools to do a very good job. There is a thread here about a set of CF scales made for a Manix2. Maybe he would do a set for you.

I made two sets of G-10 scales myself. One is orange and the other is blue. I'm using the orange ones on the Manix2 with a black 154CM blade. The one being sold now. The orange and black really look good together. It's not very hard to make them. G-10 is very easy to work with (just don't breath the dust). The only thing with mine is they are smooth. Smooth G-10 still provides a good grip but I'd prefer the textured scales if possible. I had the blue ones on my M4 Manix but put the tan ones back on because of the texture on the ones from Spyderco. Also, the tan is less conspicuous. That doesn't matter to me much though. Pulling the orange handle/black blade knife out in public is like turning on a flashlight. Also, I kind of like the "looks" it gets. Anyway, if you think you may enjoy it try making some yourself. The tools I used were a Dremel and a few accessories for cutting, sanding and buffing. Also some very fine sandpaper. If you would like to try this and don't have a Dremel I'd suggest getting one. It is one of those tools you can live without until you have one. Then you wonder how you ever got along without it. It does so many little jobs around the house it's amazing. Not to mention a very serious hobby tool.

Jack

Here is my Manix2 with my scales. It's not exceptional work but I don't mind showing it off a little. :) Sorry about the photo quality.

Thanks Chuck. I've only made 6 sets of scales in the past few months. I enjoy it but am limited to the knives I own. If you look close you'll see flaws but no one has seen the knives in public and yelled "Oh my god, that's an ugly knife." :D Not yet anyway. I think the only way I'll be able to be productive is to buy fixed blade blanks and the handle material and make some fixed blade knives. I want to make a small set of kitchen knives for my house. 4 or 5 knives. Then some hunting or utility knives. I live in a small town and have heard some people have put pictures of things like this in small stores with a phone number. If I could sell enough to fund a hobby I'd be happy with that. Thanks again.

Spyderco does not sell the scales separately but I did see the orange Manix 2 sprint on a FS forum for a really good price just last week. Look around and you'll find one. Good luck.

Thanks for the replies all. I think I'll look for a used one. I Was planning on asking Brad Southard to do a custom regrind on the blade as well but that's a little too much money to tie up in just one knife for me right now.
