Found two ATR in a knife shop today. One is stainless with serrated edge and the other is black with plain edge. I really wanted a PE stainless as I am not that into SE and also not to into black knives.

As ATR seem to be pretty hard to find I am thinking of picking up one of these. So the question is, would you get the PE black ATR or the SE stainless?

Black PE, hands down. If you can get the Black PE, it will be much easier to either trade for a PE SS one or sell for enough to buy the PE SS.

Plus, couldn't you just blast the coating off?

I'd pick up both, no matter the edge/color combo. Like Jossta mentioned, you can always trade down the road. Who knows, you might fall in love with something you previously didn't care for. I've had that happen several times.

if only one, PE. black coating isnt so bad. Its aesthetic as opposed to functional. a black coated knife will cut the same as a SS knife, but a serrated is totally different.

Full Serrated spydercos are great, but take a GREAT amount of attention to serrations on ATR.
I found a few pieces that had their serrations WAY to high and deep, creating a risk of breaking or getting stuck in hard material. But I believe that they would be terrific in flesh.

So - black plain egde for me.

ATR is Spyderco model C70. PE=plain edge SE=serrated edge CE=combo edge
