PICS and Thoughts: Balance SS

#1

Post by smikesmith3 »

Balance SS came in today and to be honest I'm not much of a fan. It is way too small and overprice for my needs. Anything this size I'm looking to the Cricket SS. I do appreciate the design and the way it sits in the hand for being so small. I'd be much more interested if this sucker was 2x-3x the size it is now. I would take a Mega Balance in a heartbeat. Price also throws me off. Running close to 70-80 bucks I might as well get a cricket which gives me a bit more blade, but does lack the superior ergos.

Some will love it some won't. That's why I love Spyderco.

I would take a 4 finger grip Balance, too.

Thanks for the notice that they have hit dealers and thanks for the review.

I like an idea of bigger Balance. G10 handle, please.

A bigger Balance wouldn't have a centered Spydie hole. It would have to be somehow redesigned.

Nice pics. A bigger one would be nice. How much would a bigger one cost? $120-150 ouch!

I have to say I'm a fan of the Balance. Initially I didn't know what to make of it but as my CF worked it's way into use I have appreciated it more and more. It excels at close quarter tough stuff, like clamshell packs, small boxes and even a close knit tough plastic webbing I cut once. The Balance likes things up close and excels at tough.

I use a 3 finger grip with my pinky nested behind the butt to make sure the knife won't move in any direction. Blade control is terrific and the sheer toughness of the build with the thick blade inspires confidence. I have a hunch the SS is similarly tough given the price and weight. Enjoy them guys :)

Thanks for the review and the pics. I actually waited for this knife to come out in SS thinking that the price will be way lower, but I guess it is not. LOL.
If I find a better price, it is on my list to get.

$80 is a bit too much for me. I know it's not really Spyderco's fault, but that doesn't mean I can afford it.

I remember reading that Schempp is designing the "Equilibrium" with a 3" blade. I am assuming it's got 2 holes, but I really have no clue what it's going to look like.

Remember reading a lot of the same type of feedback about price when the CF balance, then sprint run, first came out :) For me it's not a knife you want to make snap judgement on based on price or size :)

Well put. I totally agree. I have only read good things from people who have actually bought one.[CF Balance]

I love my balance. I hold it differently than most. I put my ring and pinky on the handle, the tip of my middle finger in the choil and my pointer finger around the back. I keep my thumb in the spyderhole. It is wonderful like that, just like having a claw.

I have been looking the Balance for a while myself. I also wish it was a bit bigger. The price to size equation is a bit off. I know that I would love it if I had it though, but for the same price you can get a blade that you might use more. It will be in my pocket someday though, I am sure.

The Balance is a really cool knife but I think it's much more attractive with the CF scales.

I'd agree, but stainless handles lend themselves well to embellishment.

Yes, it is. That's why I pulled the trigger on a CF balance some minutes ago. Now that I know that the ss version is not as cheap as I expected I go with the CF Version which also fits better into my collection. Thanks for the pictures. Maybe a ss balance will follow in the future...

Not a fan of SS, but if Spyderco would etch it, I'd be all over it. Maybe something like this:
