Next chaparral?
Next chaparral?
after my trip to SFO, i've decided my next nice spydie is a sage 1 (maybe i'll get a tenacious first but idk) anyways, the chaparral is a bit too similar for me to consider it. What do you want in the chaparral 2? I hope for either a natural or black G-10 with one of the sidelocks (BBL, CBBL, BAL) or even an integral comp lock like the atr-ti. a framelock would be cool but the techno is already coming out and that might be too similar. What do you think the chaparral 2 should give us in handle material?

Yes. The Chaparral will stick with the lockback design. The next handle material is titanium but I don't believe it will be fluted. Though, I do remember mention of some sort of design will be on the titanium. The blade should be CTS XHP.dj moonbat wrote:Unlike the Sage, the Chaparral will stick with a single locking mechanism. Handle material for the next one is titanium, with (IIRC) a CTS-XHP blade steel.

Sal said they planned to use XHP for the first Chaparral, but couldn't get it in time, so they had to go with S30V.gull wing wrote:  Why can't we have have XHP NOW? I want the first Chaparral to have XHP. Special knife, special steel. :)

I'm an admirer of Spyderco's designs. Using them is like immersing yourself in music or studying a painting in a museum. I buy some "fine" art but my preference is for usable art.
While matching in appearance the Chap in my understanding is a completely different animal. The lock is the obvious one but the 2mm FFG blade and overall thinness put it in a league of it's own. I understand it's a touch shorter overall too and lighter.
The Deacon did a review of the proto. You might check it out. Most of those locks would be hard pressed to work with it...it's really thin. :)

Its all trade offs with steel, blade shape, and blade length/widthcasey1 wrote:2mm? i thought it was 2.5.. maybe i'm wrong. either way won't that make it a little weak?
thin blades are better slicers.

Yea it's 2mm, CPM-s30v. It's a tough steel but it's hardly a pry bar. The Deacon says it 6 pennies thick at the handle. Some locks would work and others prob not but Sal's already devotes the mid backlock to the series.casey1 wrote:2mm? i thought it was 2.5.. maybe i'm wrong. either way won't that make it a little weak?
Thin bladed knives have bad reps. The tip on this is more broad (top to bottom) than a FFG Delica which likely tapers just as thin.
The thing that people forget is that thin blades are still quite thick vertically. If you avoid twisting and turning in a thick cut it's not a problem. Thin blades also drag less so less pressure is needed. Sharp > force every time.

I've jointed a few chickens with a K05 Utiility Knife without damaging it. Its blade is 1.2mm at the spine and over an inch longer than the Chaparral's. Comparison may not be totally fair, since it's a different steel, and one more geared to kitchen cutlery, but it does show that thin blades are not always weak.
As for the Chaparral, when I was packing for my move, I made it my "go to" knife, mostly just to see how well it would perform. Cut lots of cardboard, some of it quite thick and a lot of it cut with considerably less than 100% attention to how I was holding the knife. It did a great job. Blade is intact and the lockup is still tighter than the proverbial waterfowl's nether regions. It's now my "city" knife. I carry it whenever I'm going into the City of Greenville since they have a 3" blade limit.

Yes. But as you said, it's still better than some places and I only go into Greenville a couple times a week. On the bright side, autos appear to be legal here. :)bh49 wrote:Did you know this prior to your move? Still much better than NYC.
