Brass or Copper Spyderco. Please?
Brass or Copper Spyderco. Please?
One thing lacking on the market is brass and copper handled folders.
Without going into a 500 word rant (like usual), is Spyderco open to doing one? Patina is good :) . The snobs will love it.
Anyone else think solid or with CF/g10 accents would be cool?

I believe brass is about 10% heavier than stainless steel and it's a little softer. That said it's very malleable. Also, my understanding is the oxidation process it goes through kills most bacteria while other surfaces don't so while not hypoallergenic it's a nice material for tools.
If satin finished it should be just as slick as SS but a little more expensive. I think as it scratches and tarnishes it gains character but that can be polished back to a luster.
Copper is softer and far more expensive. Prob 10-20% cheaper than titanium instead of 10-20% more pricey than SS. Super cool though and with some similar properties. Brass is copper with some zinc.
Anyways, im far from a metallurgist. Just own a brass flashlight and can't get enough of either of those! :) .
Note: not too familiar with bronze. Know generally it's copper and phospherous or tin. Makes great anti-corrosion parts and has a cool color. Something I learned is the Bronze age turned into the Iron age mostly from availability and cost of iron...roman officers still had bronze because it was generally tougher than iron and stood up to corrosion better (also looked wicked-bad). Iron to steel of course changed this.

I'm thinking solid brass handles :) I guess you could do scales or liners but the appearance looks great and would work for almost any knife I think. Like I said, not an engineer but it's pretty easy to work with compared to high hardness steel or fibrous products.
If they did an ATR in brass I might very well have a heart attack. I know the CPF folks would go ballistic for a quality folder in any of those materials to match their custom lights. The Chapparel would be a great candidate, IMHO.
Here's my Macs Custom SST-50 EDC the day I got it and then about a year later from casual carry and no polishing.
Really Brass, Copper, Bronze...anything works for me!
Note: I'm not sure how much weaker a folder if well designed would be based on materials alone. That's definitely another discussion well above my pay grade and education. I'll take it cosmetically though anytime.
