As a commercial diver i would really like to get an assist with H1 steel just wondering if spyderco would consider it.

I think the saver salt is the next best thing though

Im sure you wouldnt need a window breaker out at sea though lol.

Nothin is impossible but the Assist has quite a few more parts. Cost would be my concern.

Just curious as to what the assist would offer a commercial diver that the Atlantic or Saver Salt does not. Is it the cobra hood, or something else? As Blerv said, it's not impossible. It would be surprising to me if the did make it, but Spyderco has surprised me before.

my guess is that the assist is easier to open with the gloves. some divers, especially ones with dry suits don't want a fixed blade because they might cut the suit when they put it back in its sheath. when i dive with the Dept and if you used the blade in an incident we are supposed to just drop the knife wherever we are. The next day the guys can drill at the scene and they will probably find it, if not they will buy another, they use cheap ones compared with the caspians.

Vg 10 is pretty corrosion resistant. But I guess it wouldnt be bad seeing an assist in H1. I would think it locks better in the hand because of the larger handle and ergos

The Atlantic salt is nice but the Assist would be pretty close to perfect. The cobra hood helps when wearing 3 finger cold water gloves, or heavy rubber tending gloves, the safety tip is better when diving with dry suits especially if you are cutting entanglements when diving hard hat which limits your immediate field of view. The whistle is good for man overboard. I typically like to use folders when diving I put a SS Split ring through the lanyard hole and attach a brass clip so that I can attach it to my harness D-ring, and when I am tending I can clip it to my belt loop and tuck the end into my pocket for quick access, or hand it on the boat canopy to keep it off the deck and in view.

I'm totally with you on this one. Working as an EMT and a Technical Rescuer, my Assist sees quite a bit of use. Sometimes after a water rescue call, it sits in my gear bag for a few hours before I can get back to drying it. I haven't had any issues with rusting or pitting, but it would definitely be nice to have the piece of mine H1 offers. While i'm not yet a diver (I'll be taking a Public Safety Diver class this sumer) I find the Assist's blunt tip, cobra hood, and the size/shape of the handle make it pretty much ideal for rescue-use or for use with thick heavy duty gloves.

I did look briefly at the Saver Salt (and other rescue knives offered by spyderco) but the biggest thing that kept me from buying one was the lack of the blunt "safety" tip. I NEVER use a knife around a patient when I have a good set of trauma shears, but the blunt tip for me is a nice re-assurance if I ever need to use it in such a fashion. If a Saver salt with an assist-style tip were offered, I'd buy one in a heartbeat :D .

While we're at it, I'd love to see a normal stamped metal pocket clip (like on the other Salt series knives) instead of the flimsy wire one. I've bent the clip and almost lost the knife several times. Though wire clips sure are nice for light-duty EDC, they have no place on a hard-use knife IMO.
