Question for SpydercoCrew(or anyone else) about FRN UKPK

#1

Post by cosmo7809 »

Hey guys, I was looking to purchase another FRN UKPK to accompany my blue drop-point.

Does anyone(probably from the Spyderco Crew) know when the FRN UKPK's will be shipped with the better tension spring.

While the tension now its not a deal breaker, I would not mind having some a little more like the G10 UKPK.

Also, when on the subject of FRN UKPK, do we know when they will ship with the BD-1 steel. Will both upgrades happen at once?

Thanks, Chris

I would like to know if we will be able to buy the new spring, or send in the knives for a switch out of the springs.

I'm very curious to these answers, also. I'm on hold for a UKPK FRN until I can get one with the new features.

ukpk drop point combo edge blue , is my last buy ,(5 days ago, payed 60 euros, and impressed me more than delica hg and ffg , this is a cool ergonomic and practical knife ) , about that spring , i have a question, all i see a metal rod connected with 1 screw , isn't supposed to be 2 points , to support the tension , or a fixed point at the end ?

The FRN is molded inside to form a very small pillar and the back-spring has a round hole in it which slots into this pillar creating the tension at the back end ;)

I use 2 FRNs and the old one (a grey PE drop-point, courtesy of The Deacon bought early in 2010) has a very weak spring but the other one (a maroon PE leaf-blade, bought later in 2010 when the leaf-blades were released) feels about the same as a G10/CF ... but then again, even the G10s have some variability :)

The tension of both is fine for me and I like being able to flick it shut by just pushing the back of the blade against my leg. Too tight and it would be dangerous to do that and it would become more difficult to one-hand-open with my arthritic thumbs. The choil is the safety device to stop accidents and really users shouldn't rely on the back-spring tension.

All that said ... I am definitely getting one of the BD-1 FRNs with the new springs when they come out ... just to compare them against the rest :D
My spydies: Squeak, Tenacious, Terzuola, D'Allara, UKPK CF peel-ply pre-production, UKPK CF smooth pre-production, UKPK G10 orange leaf-blade, UKPK FRN grey drop-point, UKPK FRN maroon leaf-blade, Bug ... all PE blades :)

Sorry for the delay in replying to the questions. I needed to confirm some information.

Both changes to the FRN UKPK are part of our CQI (Constant Quality Improvement) process. Both will be a rolling change in the line.

The steel change to BD-1 will be more immediate and you'll start seeing it in the near future.

You'll see a change to the spring in late Summer / early Fall. Again, this is part of CQI, so we will not be selling or replacing existing springs.

Hope this helps.

Kristi

Ah the steel change is nearer than I expected. :D
Glad to hear that, guess I'll wait for the new springs then. :)

SmoothOne25,

You are a true example of dedication. Or is it obsession? :D

(I'm not judging - I would probably be doing similar if I had a little more disposable income, which I should soon..)

I'm pretty sure they aren't going to do 19 production runs of knives on the promise they will sell 19 knives. It sounds very unlikely.
