Rarest Production Spyderco

#1

Post by pcb105 »

Hi all,

This has probably been posted 100 times before, but I couldn't find it. The question I have is what is the rarest production spyderco (non-sprint runs, non customized)?

I think the rarest ones I personally own are the C51P Rookie, the C55GPE Starmate, and the C68GTR Gunting trainer. I also have a FB16P Forester.

If you're limiting it to regular production, then it might just be the T-Mag. There's a good chance it was Spyderco's poorest seller, and was made in Golden, so there may have been less than a full run produced. Gut tells me the Gunting and P'kal trainers have to be pretty slow movers too. If I want to quibble a bit, I could say any of the 16 versions of the Kopa. They weren't Sprints, they weren't customized, and there were only 600 of each.

I'd love to get my hands on a Starmate....and a Lum Tanto....and an original Manix.
The rarest one's I have a are the original Worker, the Police P.I.G. and the C15 Terzuola.
I will be adding the Walker CF, a Chinook I, a left-handed C15 Terzuola and a C23 Renegade to my collection soon.

Hard to find are also the Ti handled Peter Herbst & the 2-screw clip Worker I think.

The Cat/Chicago pair might qualify also.

There are many rare Q knives. Non-produced, one offs, two offs, few offs. I know, I know it always comes down to Q's with me. Yeah one track mind.

Pic is near the bottom, under the Cricket.

My guess is the Bushcraft UK with spalted maple. i'm guessing maybe 100 got past quality control.

I'm also guessing that it beats out the Cat / Chicago because even though they had high rejection rates there were two production runs.

Guess it depends on how you define "production".

The rare Q's, and there are most definitely some rare ones, were made for the companies whose logos they carry. To me, that makes them more like dealer/distributor "sponsored Sprints" than regular production.

The 9-11 Rescues were not sold, but rather given away. To me, they're closer to customs, and things like the Dino Bone Executive than to production. If you start counting things like that then the "Thanx Much" engraved knives Sal occasionally sends to folks here who've helped with projects, most recent I'm aware of being the Sage III's sent to Yablanowitz and Araneae, have to be even rarer. Some of those are, quite literally, "one offs" and, like the 9-11's and the DB Execs, they were rewards for service, something earned rather than purchased.

Sequmite's answer is probably closest.

I would have to say the burgundy handled Vesuvius with the compression lock.

There are only 600 Balances, so if the Kopas are in the running with all of its variants, I'd say the Balance must be a strong contender.

Again, it comes down to how one defines "production". If forum models are considered production models then it would definitely be a top contender, as would the Forum Military and forum marked specimens of the Native III and Spyderhawk.

Has that ever been confirmed as a fact? Or was it just a case of "we're making 600 to start" with no promise there would not be more? Catalog mentions nothing about it being a Sprint.
