Rock Salt Dilemma
This morning I decided that I would sell the Rock Salt that's been sitting in my closet for a few months. I bought it on ebay for about $300, and I haven't had the balls to actually cut anything with it. It's like lighting a hundred-dollar bill on fire as soon as I put the edge to something.
So, I brought the knife to work, took some photos, logged on to ebay, and wrote up the auction. And couldn't bring myself to actually start the auction! The knife is just too nice to sell!
I've been telling myself that I can sell it, and then use some of the money to buy one of the new Rocks that should (in theory) come out this year. But then I start second-guessing myself - what if the new ones are really expensive? What if I don't like the FFG? What if someday I need to soak my knife in the ocean for several days and then perform some delicate cutting tasks?
What are you all thinking?
And, to hijack my own thread, has anyone put different scales on their Rock Salt? I'm thinking G-10.

As a mere mortal myself, when I tie up too much money in knives I run out of money. So I can't have everything I want and must decide which things I want more than others.
Like many others here, I purge the knives that have sunk below my consciousness. Of course when I take the knives out to prepare to sell them, I remember all over again what I liked about the knife.
I try to look at it this way, I've gained the knowledge, experience and fun of having the knife and I get to keep all that even though the knife itself is gone; that is what I'm really collecting.

Our reason is quite satisfied, in 999 cases out of every 1000 of us, if we can find a few arguments that will do to recite in case our credulity is criticized by someone else. Our faith is faith in someone else's faith, and in the greatest matters this is most the case.

In your case, think of it as money in the bank. That sucker will continue to hold a high secondary market value for a long time. I'm using mine but only because I was able to get a backup one for a premium.DeathBySnooSnoo wrote:I'm doing the same with my Para2 S90V...I really should sell it. I need the cash for other things...and I know that it's not a knife that I will use. Just not lefty friendly enough....but every time I take it out, I end up thinking, well what if...
I was collecting folders without a goal for a while and lately I set some clear direction on where I want to go. CF Spydies and Manix/Manix 2 variants. The rest have to fill some use criteria. There are some ethnic models I'll keep for aesthetic or rarity values. And I am hoping consistently limit myself to that.
I just have to convince myself to post the massive "for sale" post on BF.

I knew I'd find some people in similar situations here!
I generally don't like to keep a knife if it's not going to be a user. If I like a knife enough, I'll throw out the box and start using it. Otherwise it'll get sold to make room for something I will use. The Rock Salt is the first knife that I love but am not sure I'll put it to good use. Spyderco knives are tools, first & foremost, and I like to do them justice.
Actually, there's one exception to my "use it or lose it" policy - I've got a spare Chokwe sitting in a box in my closet.

Oh I know that it is money in the bank...I'm just trying to get myself to actually cash it in. It is a beautiful knife, and I mostly like it in hand, but overall, definitely a seller...but letting it go is the hard part!dsmegst wrote:In your case, think of it as money in the bank. Actually, I just realized that the Temperance 2 is a somewhat similar fixed blade in VG-10 with a flat grind - and the msrp on that knife is $329! I'd imagine that the new Rock will have to be in a similar price range, given that the blade shape is more complex and presumably the esteemed Mr. Schempp will get a cut of the proceeds.
@marcdurant, I certainly understand your dilemma and wouldn't want to encourage you to do anything that you would regret. I however am one who would have that knife soaking in the ocean for several days and would still need it to split a hair. So, should you or any of the other members ever decide to part with your Rock Salt, I would be interested in purchasing it at a reasonable price.
P.S. I'm very happy to have joined a forum with so many knowledgeable steel wielding folks. Looking forward to future posts from all of you.
