Greetings Spyderco. I love the Puukko design that was shown recently. Pekka make some beautiful designs and I know Spyderco will do it justice. The prototype was shown with s30v steel but I was wondering if that is what the final production will have? I am not super picky on the blade steel but a carbon steel that is easy to sharpen would be ideal. Also what style of sheath are you planning on using with this knife. Personally my ideal choice would be for the knife to come with both a traditional leather dangle sheath and a kydex w/ g clip sheath. But if I had to choose one it would probably be a kydex with g clip simply for the fact that it would be so versatile. I would like to bring this knife with me to Afghanistan so being able to mount it on molle would be great. One last thing. Can we expect to see this knife in 2011? Thanks for everything. :D

All I'm wondering is if the knife will have a rat-tail tang. I want to know if this will be a real beater like the bushcraft or something that I will just use for lighter EDC chores.

I am also curious about the knives construction. A full tang seems to inspire the most confidence with many people. However, don't underestimate the strength of a stick tang knife. Puukko, kukri, and many other knives have stick tangs and they endure hard use with ease. Either way I will be happy to get this knife.

I have several Puukko style knives, and they all feel very good in hand. Looking forward to seeing one with the "spyderco treatment".

I've batoned a small log with a Mora Craftsman. More about technique than strength. That said the Spyderco Puukko looks a bit nicer than I'd want to abuse.

Amen, it really makes me cringe when I see people really thumping on blades and then they end up breaking even thick full tang knives. :rolleyes:

A Kuhkri has no stick tang, it's tang goes trough the handle, trough the buttcap, and is then riveted. that is in my opinion the most tough knife you can make, yes, tougher than a fulltang when made well. I know it sounds silly, but think a while about it before you think; BS.

A lot of knives, including swords, where made this way a while back. Making a full tang knife back then was no problem. but they didn't do it!

the puukko is indeed a stick tang.

And that Mora isn't a rat-tail tang, btw. It's not a full-tang knife, but it's blade tang is suspended in a tough polymer that absorbs shock very well.

My concern comes from a review video of a Helle knife that took exactly a single relatively light pop from an experienced bushcrafter batoning through a far from crazy wood chunk to blow out the tang/blade connection. Needless to say, he loved how the knife looked, he just couldn't advise anyone to get one with hard use in mind.

If I'm dropping the big bucks for a S30V knife with a collaboration percentage added, I would like to think that Spyderco and the original designer would think that tougher = better since it wouldn't really effect the end-look of the knife to have a close to full-length hidden tang in that ironwood handle. It's made with super steel so why not make it super-tough everywhere as well since it really doesn't add any cost? Sure, it might not be 100% authentic, but the S30V being used in the first place pretty well tosses that out the window anyway.

I have used a S30V-steel flat, zero grinded blade puukko-knife (hidden tang) for the last 4-5 years, allmost everyday. Without any problems.
Knife is not an 'crowbar' or 'screwdriver', knife is tool for cutting, carving etc. :)

Similar knives are also used in Antarctica to Afganistan, whit out problem. :)

I'm sure that's true Pekka, but this is the age of the internet, a time when anyone with money to throw away can film themselves doing absolutely unrealistic things to destroy a well made tool, or have someone else do it for them, then post the video on the internet and have their BS taken seriously by folks who don't understand what a knife is meant to do.

Hi Pekka,

Will there be a folder version of your puukko available sometime in the future? I've handled one during the last Helsinki Knife Show and thought it to be exceedingly well executed.

Furthermore, are there going to be alternatives to CPM S30V? I'd go for CPM M4, given a chance - a high performance carbon steel would be very fitting to a puukko.

Mallus, custom versio (selfmade by me) is of cource available. For the production run, I'm not the right person to say anything.

Pekka, thanks for your reply! Yup, a custom folder puukko would be nice but should my wife find out about the costs, the locks would be changed in our house and I wouldn't get the new keys... :) Therefore, at the moment, I'm left for hoping an affordable production model might spring into existence.
