I love this steel but why does it scratch so easily? It's so annoying!!! Time to get out the dremel and start polishing

Compared with what? Know H-1 tends to scratch easily. Know the 420J2 outer layers on the laminated ZDP-189 blades scratch like crazy. Can't recall anyone complaining about VG-10 being easily scratched before now.

I have no idea how you're using your knives but I haven't found it to be THAT SOFT.
Apparently you haven't tried cheap knives that REALLY SCRATCH up fast. ;)

Whats the big deal anyway? If you have some really nice knives that you like to keep pristine, don't use them or use them only for light duty and keep a beater that you use on the hard stuff.
Besides, wear and tear builds character. :p

I have a couple scratches on my Delica vg-10 but they are very light .. I use my knives daily and it gets more pocket time than any of them . besides I think the proper term is " Character Lines " ;)

The more you polish it, the more you will notice scratches.

If scratches really bother you, I suggest not polishing it but rather, put a coarser satin finish on it.

I don't like polished blades on working knives.
All blades scratch, thats why i like stonewashed blades, you can't see the new scratches and stonewashed looks handsome.

On some of my knives (that don't have stonewashed)I hand sand a satin finish on them, they look pretty decent.

It doesn't bother me unless it's a new knife. For example my superleaf I got acouple weeks ago from the sfo, looked it over everything was perfect after carrying it for one day two huge scratches on the blade! Oh well :/

Photos?

I agree that scratches can and do happen. I will admit to being bummed about it at times.

Sometimes I use the opportunity as a bad excuse to polish the blade to a high luster. Other times I simply look forward to the next opportunity to add badges of character (more scratches).

Are you aware of what caused the scratches? It almost sounds like you are not...which is surprising and concerning. I would add that if you are unsure how the scratches go there, we can not really rule out the possibility that any other steel submitted to the same conditions would not also have scratched.

I look forward to seeing photos.
Thanks,

I don't have any impression that VG-10 scratches unusually easily. I think it may SHOW scratches more than some other steels.

Like moonbat said, I think it's more that you see the scratches more than you would on, say, S30V, because the polish is generally much higher on VG-10. I've never had a problem with scratching on my several VG-10 users. I'm not afraid to use them "hard", and only one of them has noticeable scratches, my stretch 2, and even to see those you have to look closely.

What are you cutting?

I'm far from a scientist but wouldn't the material have to be harder than the steel or contain contaminants to produce scratches? I can see this with cardboard in some situations.

I like polished edges for how well they slice through material. Less friction = better slicing.

if scratches really bother you, you can pick a full ZDP blade or a DLC coated blade, they rarely get scratched up.

420J2 must be one of the easiest metals to scratch i've ever dealt with. VG10 does scratch but as mentioned, how bad is really relative to what you compare it to.
