Orange Manix 2

#1

Post by Spyderbro »

Quick question to those "in the know"...I just purchased a Manix 2 Orange with a plain edge (g-10?) blade. Did they make such a thing or has the scales/blade been swapped?

The orange M2 has orange-colored G10 scales, and a full flat grind plain edge blade.

Not sure what you mean.
The scales are the handle material, called G10.
The blade is S30V steel.
Is the blade stamped differently?

If it looks like this:

and features a S30V FFG blade, it is original and legit and still sold new for $120 plus shipping. See link above.

The knife you pictured above is a Spyderco Manix2 with orange scales and a hollow ground blade.

Either the person you got it from or someone else did a blade swap on it.

You cannot tell from the pictures but they could have also switched out the liners. (From skelontized to non skelontized)

As far as the value.... I'd say its decreased.

Not a FFG blade, so the knife is a Frankenstein. I hope you did not overpay... Or you can try and get your money back if it was listed as new in box.

That photo looks like a swap with one of the regular 154CM blades.

He mentioned that he changed the scales from a black one? Can I buy what would be the correct knife blade in a different color that is not so expensive and change the scales back so the entire knife would the be original?
(Don't bother?)

Negative, Spyderco does not sell individual blades or scales.

You would have to buy another manix2 with FFG blade and do another swap....(but in that case you already have the completed knife)

In my eyes its not really worth it if you can live with the blade grind....

You could always try to sell it, and with those funds buy the original orange manix2 FFG.

The orange Manix 2 is a dealer (Cutlery Shoppe) exclusive variant made by Spyderco to Cutlery Shoppe's specs:

Plain edge, full flat ground S30v blade
Orange textured G-10
Skeletonized liners

It's sort of like a sprint run but something sold through a single retailer. Yours will not be numbered as it's not part of a collector's club specific run.

I'm not in the CC but from what I gather, for every new model/variant, first 200 pieces are numbered and distributed to the dealers that exercise the CC contracts with CC members.

The rest of the knives are distributed through the distributor network to the retailers. The dealer specific models are only sold through that single dealer.

I hope that answers your questions.

EDIT:

I saw the newer posts on this thread just now. It looks like someone wanted a FFG blade in a black handle so they swapped it. I hope you didn't pay the price of the actual orange Manix 2. If you paid the price for the regular black model, you didn't over pay.

Unfortunately, that means the knife is a Frankenstein knife without warranty support and hopefully the seller did a good job putting it back together. I found that getting the handle and the lanyard pipe to fit "factory snug" was very tricky. I modded one of mine knowing the consequences. I hope you were so informed before purchasing.

If you're lucky, the previous owner just swapped the scales and left the rest alone. That way, he would have made sure that the knife will operate just like before. I suppose he did so, because I'm pretty sure he wanted his new black FFG Manix fully functional, plus he would have the benefit of a lighter handle due to the skeletonized liners.

If I'm correct, what you will get is basically just an ordinary Manix2 (worth ~$75 when new and original) minus black plus orange scale color.

I'd say that knife (if everything is ok with it) is worth maybe $60-70 max, but only if you really want the orange handles. Otherwise I'd buy a new, black one instead, because on this one, the warranty is definitely void.

Nope....

Spyderbro wrote:Or am I S.O.L.?
Well it depends on how you look at it.... You still have a Manix2 with orange scales only with "different" blade...... I think you could live with a hollow ground blade.

I wouldn't say your SOL... Maybe just not satisfied...Like I said, you still have a fully functional knife.
I just hope you did not over pay....

EDIT: Now that I think of if you should have the original skeletonized liners... Why? Because in order to switch out the liners you would have to get them past the lanyard tube. Most of the time that "opens up" the ends of the tube and it is quite hard to get it back to the way the factory does it. The swapper probably only switch out the blades and closed it back up.
