Bummed about Baliyo

#1

Post by AH2525 »

So I got a black Baliyo on Monday as abirthday present (after pestering my wife for a couple of weeks) and in starting to play with it today I found a crack along the plastic around 1 of the stainless steel rings. I have been really careful and did drop it once earlier today but checked it and there was no damage after the drop (onto a carpeted floor). I noticed the crack while spinning it in my hand.

I was really excited and am now bummed as I have found some posts stating that this has been an issue in the past. I have always had great service from Spyderco and plan to send this back to customer sevice. I was curious if anyone else has had to send 1 back before and how it worked out. Thanks.

I got my black baliyo in and after playing with it after a while i noticed this happened to me on both sides! The black plastic has cracked and seperated around the metal rings on each handle. I didnt even think to send it back until reading this, it just seemed like a trivial chinese made plastic toy, I am curious as to if they do customer service/warranty on these

Same issue here a while back. Fun toy, but I'll not be looking for a replacement.

The black ones are made in china and the plastic and build quality is slightly different than the ones made in the US. I was able to play with both at the SFO and there is a weight difference as well as the China ones feel more toy/cheap like.

From their FAQ on the Baliyo website
Where is the BaliYo made?
The “YUS” BaliYo is 100% U.S.A. made. The ”YCN” BaliYo is manufactured in China.

American handles go best. Same thing happened to me. I've had blue handles now for almost 2 years and they're going great.

There's a thread about this somewhere, the Chinese ones chip really easily. Mine did the same.

****, I have 2 of the US ones and out of 4 spots, 3 are cracked in both.
Granted, they've been well used and dropped several times, it's just plastic.
I DO wish that they'd tweak the design a little bit to eliminate the weak spots, like they do with knives. :) I mean they are toys and you train with them and drops WILL happen!
It'd also be wicked if they replaced the plastic with FRN! :D

I've got a USA (Red, White, Blue) Bali-Yo that I've been flipping for 2 years and 4 months, now. It has been dropped on tile and concrete hundreds of times, and there is not a crack on it.

The clip snagged a laundry bag, though, and bent it :(

Ah, your bali skills are weak...

Kidding ;)

I have a Chinese one and it is doing fine. Then again I don't drop mine. I can understand dropping a live blade, however I don't worry too much about the pen cutting me. :)

My friend's chinese made baliyo did the same thing. He just put some super glue on it and it has held up since.
