Byrd Civilian?

#1

Post by Tsujigiri »

Is there any chance that Byrd might make a cheaper version of the Civilian? It doesn't seem like it would be that hard to do, and judging by the way the Matriarch sprint sold, I'd think that a cheaper reverse S-blade would sell well. Since the Civilian isn't meant for utility, and is more of a last resort, you wouldn't really need a high grade steel that holds its edge well. 8Cr13Mov should work fine for something that you'll hopefully never have to use. The Civilian is pretty neat, but I'm sure a lot of people can't justify spending that much money on something they won't really use, me included. And in addition to the Spyderco fans who would be all over a knife like this, I'm sure there are plenty of mainstream mall ninjas who a design like that would appeal to...

Interesting idea.

I wouldn't buy it though, since I'm an 'AFI', but, I don't fairly represent the knife market.

Spyderco has been very low key about marketing the Civilian. I could be wrong, but I can't see them wanting to do a complete 180 on that and put out a "mass market" version.

Get the G10 Crossbill, plain or fully serrated, excelent poor mans replacement for the Civilian.. More important is to get at least a basic training in knife work.

I love that knife, but it's discontinued isn't it? :(

A FFG Byrd Crossbill2 with G10 would be nice..

Seconded, if you can find one.

The Crossbill G10 is a solid and dependable knife. My knives have no role in SD but the Crossbill has taken a beating as a hiking "pruner" (until I got a folding kukhri!) and shows no signs of trouble.

This sort of thing was its bread and butter:

Can you spot the Crossbill?!

Great bang for buck ratio.

i dont buy byrds but a seriously curved civi model could be cool. more curve than above pic^

would cheaper steel with a blade shape like that be a recipe for problems?

I don't like the idea of marketing a civilian to everyone. I like how the knife is a bit expensive. Deters people from carrying it.
