Sage Vs. Endura4 and dragonfly??

#1

Post by .357 mag »

A few days ago I signed up on this forum to get some info on the Sage. I can't believe all the help I recieved. Thanks again. But, here is my main problem. I have about 100 bucks. ( take 20) and when I first started looking for knives, I was set on getting 2 knives. The Endura4 and the Dragonfly lightweight(??). I have carried 2 knives for a few years now and I like to have options. I think these two knives will give me those options. Light weight (i think 5oz total for the 2), FFG, and 2 different blades. I don't know much about VG-10 but I heard good things about it. Anyways, These two knives were a sure buy until I saw the Sage.

The Sage is between the two knives. I already like 30sv but how much better is it than VG-10? Sage price is about the same as the two so I'm lost. What would you do?

Thanks,

S30v is better than vg10, but not twice as, i.e. one s30v blade vs. two vg10 blades. Personally I'd go for sage as the quality and material just feels much better, do you really need a large knife and a small knife?

It depends on how you use your knives. VG-10 is a little easier to sharpen and holds an edge quite well. It has better toughness, i.e. the edge will tend to roll rather than chip. S30V has a higher vanadium content and higher total carbide volume, giving it a bit more wear resistence but making it somewhat harder to sharpen. It also tends to chip rather than roll on the edge. For cutting abrasive material, the S30V will hold a usable edge longer than the VG-10. That said, the Sage is not really a heavy-duty knife. It is very capable, and it will easily handle jobs that are out of the "gentleman's knife" league, but for a real beater, the Endura would be my choice, with a Dragonfly to handle the little jobs.
I don't believe in safe queens, only in pre-need replacements.

Yes and No. I like the idea of having both depending on the job I'm doing and where I am. Pulling a 4 inch knife out to clean finger nails or opening a letter can be to much. I also like having a small knife you when I go jogging, to the gym, or just hanging around the house.

That what I've read about both steels. I pretty good at sharpening, and I don't mind touching up my knives. ( I injoy doing so.)

That's not from what I've read, just my personal observations from using both steels (and all 3 of the knives in question ;) ).

I think sage is about the right size for all the situations.

Not sure if you made your choice yet, but I own all 3 of those knives and I must say the sage is my favorite of the bunch. The ergonomics, build quality, and size are just way better than the dragonfly and the endura. If I had to pick one out of them it'd be the sage hands down and its actually the knife I carry most out of all my knives (the CF sage). I have the Ti sage also but it just looks so nice I don't want to scratch it up =/. The scales on the CF sage are also **** near indestructible. I've dropped my sage on concrete and it actually scratched the exposed part of the liner with no damage to the CF at all.

im gonna throw a vote in for the E4 and the new dragonfly II. The dragonfly is a great little knife and I have been beating my SE version up for a good 3-4 years with no problems to date.

Delica and Endura are great knives! They're the low priced crack samples that'll get you hooked on spyderco! Feed the need!

Really depends on what your priorities are. The Sage is a classy looking, extremely well made knife. The Endura and Dragonfly are well made workhorses that, between them would offer you greater versatility.

I think you picked a great combo of knives...if you can carry the Endura legally then you have the best of both worlds as far as size goes. The catch though is like someone else mentioned, the Sage is right between the two in size and unless you need the extra length of the Endura, i can't see it doing you any more good than the Sage will, and for me having 2 knives i feel like i'll always be leaning towards using one of them over the other. I think the Endura would get neglected in favor of the smaller and easier to use Dragonfly, and then i think that compared to the Sage the Dfly would be too small for most of my needs. All three knives are fantastic, but holding all three, you will immediately know why the Sage costs as much as both of the others.

I like S30V than VG-10. How much better is it than S30V? Well, practically speaking there's not really an advantage to having S30V over VG10.

My two favorite EDCs are the Dragonfly and the Sage. So I say get both of those!

You can't go wrong with whichever you choose. If you really like the sage, I would just get it... the only real reason to have a D'fly is if you have blade length restrictions, and since you're already considering an Endura I don't think you'll have any issues.

I decided to go with the zdp delica. Being half the cost of the saga and inbetween the endura and dragonfly, I felt it was best knife for me. Thanks for all your help.

Delica is a great choice. You'll end up with most, if not all of them at some point. The Spyderco bug will get you.

Yup. This is my 3 spyderco. 2 of them I bought 15 years ago. I have always liked them. ( harpy and a mini dyad I think they call it). The two biggest reasons I chose the delica was a wanted to try the ZDP steel and the size, weight of the knife.
