Military thickness

#1

Post by happyhunter »

Hi all,
this is my first post here. I have gotten the itch for a new knife. Been looking at the Military and Paramilitary knives. I gather they have recessed liners in the handle scales. This should make for a thinner handle. However, I can not find a spec on how thick they are. So, how thick are the Military and Paramilitary knives?

Thanks,
HH

hey hh,
welcome to the forums!
the liners are recessed into the g10.
my para 1 measures 7/16" not including the clip. my milie measures exactly the same.
both are way cool knives! i'd recommend either one, or both! :D
hope this helps!
later,
don

If I may suggest something...

Numbers are great, but I find that measurements fail compared to visualizing these things in hand. If you can not get to a knife shop and handle them your self, please check out some videos online. There are some great reviewers out there...and some are really bad, but a volume adjustment fixes that...just look at the knives moving around in hand, you would be surprised how much more your brain gets from video vs still images.

Both the Mil and PMil are insanely light IMO. Either one will have you scratching your head trying to figure out how a knife can be that light AND stiff (and arguably quite tough).

Welcome to the forum. Hope you enjoy your stay.
Thanks,
Ken (my real name)

Maybe you can mention what knife/knives you have and an obliging member here can post comparison pics.

Back about 1991 I bought my first "tactical folder" a Spyderco Endura, I guess 1st gen. Carried that for 8 years. Then bought a Benchmade AFCK with the liner lock. I've carried that ever since. I tend to like the bigger blades.

I do have a BM miniGriptillian for places where sheep dwell. I would like to upgrade it to a Paramilitary (1 or 2). I would not mind a Military to rotate with the AFCK.

The Millie has a rep of being easy to carry in spite of it's size. I guess the thickness would help that. I was wondering how thick it really is. I really like my AFCK and have rarely thought it too big.

FYI I am not a big person either. 5'5" and about 165 lbs. I have pretty small hands.

Regarding the Millie's thickness, beware: older models (ats-34 and 440V blades) had thinner G10 scales. I actually like the newer thicker ones better. Blade thickness has remained 4mm at the tang.

I'm on the other side of the fence here, I far prefer the slimness of the older single liner Millies. I was a little surprised at the thickness of my newly acquired Ti/g10 M4 Millie. While it's only about 2mm thicker overall, it's much more noticeable in hand and pocket than I expected.
