Spydie Pictured in Wall Street Journal

#1

Post by Appler »

Anybody catch the pic of the Spydie on the cover of yesterday's WSJ Money and Investing section? It sure looks like an FRN-handled model, but the angle of the shot and the pronounced belly on the blade has stumped me as to what model it is...

Probably an article further demonizing knives or otherwise portraying them in a negative light.

This page has a picture from yesterday's WSJ. It doesn't look like a Spyderco.

I think its a delica and the angle just makes it look like a lot of belly.

Might be a Byrd?? The hole doesn't seem round.

I downloaded the image and increased magnification significantly. The quality of the knife's image is poor and at an extreme angle. However, it appears that the black blotch in front of the blade hole could be a Spydie logo and that the hole is round. The logo is certainly in the correct place. The angle and background reflections make the back of the hole seem somewhat pointed, but I don't think that it is. A Byrd is pointed at the front of the hole anyway and there's no evidence of that here.

Looking at the blade belly and comparing it to my Delica 4 at a similar angle, the knife isn't a Delica 4. Comparing the blade length to the grower's thumb, I'd say that the blade is about 3" or so. The blade is clearly saber ground.

That's the best that I can do with the picture. Someone else will have to guess the knife from this.

It's hard to say what that is. The hole doesn't look quite round, and the scale looks really fat. It doesn't look like any :spyder: I can identify.

Nope. Just an article about pests attacking the Florida citrus crop, with a diseased orange cut open.

Both good guesses. Those two, plus the SnapIt are about the only Spydercos with a saber grind, relatively straight spine, and that much curve a the front of the blade.

Well, be fair about it. Think of how much more dangerous we are when we can open our knives with only one hand!!

Cant be a SOG as although they are oval, the top has a "slit" cut into the oval.

I'd vote for the goddard also--the roundness and thickness of the scales don't seem to fit any other spydies.

It kind of resembles the Spyderco Snap-It Red FRN PE that was offered through A.G. Russell...

However, what appears to be the snap clip seems to be on the wrong side of the handle and facing the wrong direction.

I don't think so, though I wondered about BM too--BM's don't have that much belly IMO.
