Sometimes I give into day dreaming, but this morning it came upon me with my morning coffee. I was admiring my two newest Spydies; my Manix2 in all black and my new Damascus/VG-10 mule, and then it hit me !! What a fantastic, almost perfect combo the two would make. :spyder:
I know I'm new around this forum, but I've been carrying a Spyderco for over 12 to 14 yrs., but just lately got hit with this new need to start collecting some.
I know Sal spends time here too, so here is my idea for the month.
A new Sprint run of a Manix2 with Damascus/VG-10 blade? I'd buy a few myself! But like I said, it was only an early a.m. day dream, but what a dream.
Am I dreaming ?
I think that you are correct about day dreaming. In real life this can be a little difficult to achieve. Manix is Golden made and VG10 is Japanese steel, which can create some problems. Also IMHO Manix is heavy duty knife, why would you want Damascus on it? I think Damascus would be much more appropriate on gents knife, preferably with bolsters like Persian or Caly.

My top choices Natives5, Calys, C83 Persian

bh49,
That would be sweet also. I am not a steel expert by any means, but I see the point on VG10. May I ask for another brand of USA steel then? I'm not picky, I just love the looks of the idea. The Damascus is a process, no, so how about a heavy duty Damascus steel on a HD Manix with Ti liners while I'm dreaming? I was always able to dream in Technicolor and 3D! Might be costly, yes, but a beauty just the same IMO.

I think for starters the blade should be FFG and very broad to show off the pattern to its best. But if I had to choose a model to have it with I'd dream for a Damascus UKPK with smooth CF handles :D
My spydies: Squeak, Tenacious, Terzuola, D'Allara, UKPK CF peel-ply pre-production, UKPK CF smooth pre-production, UKPK G10 orange leaf-blade, UKPK FRN grey drop-point, UKPK FRN maroon leaf-blade, Bug ... all PE blades :)
I think a Damascus blade on a sage [granted its going off their s30v course], to commemorate a knife blade designer who specializes in Damascus styles? I mean there are so many ways to conjure the steel in order to procure a specific design [circles/teardrops, waves etc], or even adding a different mixture in order to produce a different color in the Damascus blade itself.
My dream from spyderco would be this ---->how hot would it be to have a damascus blade Endura with anodized [doesn't even need to be anodized id be extremely happy with the regular grey colored Ti] framelock titanium handles? Doesn't need to be the dark damascus we always see either, to make it unique, it could be a "white damascus", very similar to blue steel damascus if not the same <---------- Even better if there was a pattern in the damascus [as many custom knife makers do]

There are plenty of non-VG10 Damascus steels out there that are US-made, or at least available to purchase for use in a US-made knife. Check out some of the cool patterns offered by Damasteel. Or maybe Spyderco could convince Ed Schempp to make up another batch of something interesting. Devin Thomas also has some superb patterns and makes knife-blade quality Damascus (Chris Reeve Knives uses his Damascus).
While the Manix 2 wouldn't be my first pick for a Damascus knife (I agree with bh49 that a Persian or Caly, or even a Lum Chinese would be better suited), I certainly wouldn't say no to it. If it was a Persian/Caly/Lum Chinese, then VG-10/Damascus would certainly be a possibility, as those are all Japanese-made. I also think the Sage design would show off the visual qualities of Damascus quite well.

Found a few other Damascus makers, and I'm sure there are tons more out there:
Doug Ponzio - has some very interesting mosaic patterns
Chad Nichols - I really like his Lizard and BrainWave patterns
Barry Gallagher - while his designs are too overdone for my taste, he does have some very cool colorations in his Damascus
Ed Caffrey - some other interesting Damascus colorations
