Playtime with My Granddaughter (Knife Related)

Post by 2edgesword »

Spend some practical/tactical time with my 13 year old granddaughter doing standard grip MBC partner flow drills. She has been training off and on since she was nine years old. A little young for weapons training but she has always been very mature and focused for her age.

The sequence of the drills is "Largo Mano, Outside-Outside, Six Count, Fifty-Fifty, Sumbrada. Puno Sumbrada and the Speed Drill"

Since we have to stay settled in front of the camera there is not a lot of aggressive footwork.

That is very nice work on her part. When do you start working feet?

I learned them from Michael Janich, founder of Martial Blade Concepts and a member of the Spyderco team helping to develop new knives for us knife nuts.

We do foot work but since we were working with a stationary camera we didn't do any footwork for the video.

2edgesword is a fully certified Martial Blade Concepts instructor under Michael Janich. He is solid martial artist and very good with the material.

It is great to see a teen taking an interest in defensive combat skills. Keep up the good work. And encourage your granddaughter to keep her guard up while drilling.

Most of the MBC curriculum is initially taught with static footwork. This is based on the assumption that if you are attacked, you will most likely be in a situation where you are at a disadvantage, i.e., backed into a wall or corner. In this situation, a dependence on footwork to work a technique may result in a collision with a solid object, and a less than desirable outcome. The idea is to teach usable functional defensive skills in as short a time as possible. Not the typical "McDojo" approach to martial arts instruction. MBC does employ footwork - it's called walking - a skill set most of us possess without martial training. In MBC, when we "walk" we "walk violently" (a term coined by Kelly McCann).

Check out the MBC website for more information on the MBC system and Michael Janich. You can also check out the MBC Training Blog and Stay Safe Media's YouTube channel

Appreciate the kudos Mike Rigg. I'm really hoping that at some point I can bring my granddaughter to Colorado to enjoy the Martial Blade Camp experience.

A big "thank you" to you for the tremendous amount of time and energy you've put into producing the MBC, CBC and PUC training material and the huge assistance you give to Michael Janich each year in making Martial Blade Camp happen. Attending the camp is always one of the highlights of the year for me.

2edgesword,

Only recognition where it is due.

I would be a great pleasure to train with your granddaughter at Martial Blade Camp. I hope that you can make it together soon. We had 4 women train with us at camp this year. They rocked - quite literally. The more the merrier!

Having the opportunity to study the MBC/CBC, Damithurt Silat and Sobadiwan Eskrima material in detail while producing the DVDs has really helped me understand the movement, physical structure and conceptional potential that lie inside a very accessible and easily learned system.

Producing Mike's instructional materials and being one of his private students is a great honor and a privilege.

Best,

Mike

If I brought my granddaughter home with the bruises "Peaches" had on her arms and legs a the end of the camp my daughter would kill me :) .

You really had to admire their willingness to take the punishment and still show up for every training session over the four days.

At 5'2" and maybe 105, "Peaches" could rock me hard with a "split X" block. Truly tough.

She wore the bruises like badges of honor, as I am sure your granddaughter would.

Best,

This is amazing! I'm so jealous your granddaughter has such great luxury.

I want to get involved in this Martial Blade Concepts. Can someone direct me to the right direction and show me how I can get started? I have always been fascinated with MBC since I started Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

I live in California; is it mandatory to fly to Colorado for the Martial Blade Camp? I will eventually once I have the time and money..

I'm not aware of any certified MBC instructors in California but I'm sure there are some practitioners there. Michael Janich occasionally does seminars in California (looks like he was just there in October) so you might want to check the schedule page on the MBC website periodically to view his seminar schedule:

http://www.martialbladeconcepts.com/schedule.htm

I understand the cost and time commitment to travel to Colorado for Martial Blade Camp but based on my experience (six trips from NY) it is well worth the effort. In the meantime I would rate his training material as some of the best available, not just in the material covered but with respect to the presentation. This is from someone that has viewed 100+ hours of edged weapons training material from numerous sources.

Does my bias show? :)

Of course as an MBC instructor I have a strong bias towards MBC but it is founded in having done a fair amount of personal research before I made MBC my focus with respect to edged weapons training. There is commonality between MBC and other edged weapons systems but IMHO (and it's only one persons educated opinion) Michael is one of the best instructors/communicators out there and has a tremendous gift for breaking down techniques/concepts and packaging/presenting the material in an easily understandable manner.

O.k., I'm off my soapbox.

Dear Paul:

Awesome video! Thank you so much for sharing it and for sharing MBC with your granddaughter! Her flow and ability to pick up the transitions is outstanding!

Thanks also for the kind words about the system. It's an honor having you as an instructor and a representative of what MBC is all about.

Thanks, also, to Mike Rigg for sharing his thoughts and kudos.

Stay safe,

Mike

2edgesword,
Very cool! Kudos to you for working with your young granddaughter, and kudos to her for quite obviously picking up quite a bit of skill at such a young age!
