Machete help

#1

Post by tkdiver1 »

I am looking for a descent machete for camping/around the house yard work. I dont need "top of the line" but I also don't want junk. Any recommendations? As far as price I would like to get the best bang for the buck on this. Just a solid knife at a descent price. Thanks in advance for your help.

Probably ought to post this in the "Off Topic" section. That being said, I use a Japanese hatchet available here: http://www.garrettwade.com/japanese-cho ... /19S13.01/ and here: http://www.japanwoodworker.com/product. ... t_id=13269.

Hate to even mention the name around here, but Cold Steel has the best machetes for the money. That's the only product I've bought from them. I'm also looking at their tomahawks.

I just use a CS kukuri Machete. $14 and I don't care if it gets messed up. It works great though its been very helpful out on camping trips.

You don't even need any big name one. I have a $10 coghlan's and it works great, you can find it at outdoor/camping section of pretty much any store. Needs sharpening when you buy it thou as any other cheap machete does.

Martindale machetes, goloks, etc. are a good value. I do find the handles can have "hot spots." So I wrap mine with the stuff they sell for girl's softball bats. Learned that one from my daughter.

There are a lot of good models on the market. For inexpensive, good quality, I like Tramontina - you can get them for less than $10.

Also, Machete Specialists has some good info on selecting the right blade style: http://www.machetespecialists.com/main.html

I have two Martindales and I enjoy them, but I would like to try a Condor Carbon steel or Ontario in the next few years.

Cold Steel Machete.
18" Latin Machete w/ sheath plus shipping: Just under $26.00 from whatever site I used to order it.

I've used it some because I don't need one often. The reason I didn't already have one is the prices I saw were just too high for the amount that I would use one. But at this price I'm very happy with the price and quality of the machete. The steel I think is 1055 carbon and is covered with some very tough black stuff that is kind of hard to get off which you have to do to sharpen it. I think if I remove all of it it will cut better due to less friction along the blade. Other models available as well.

I suggest either the military contract (Commonly called USGI) machete from Ontario, or the 14" Tramontina Machete. I think 14" is the ideal length, but the USGI has good momentum from the length and thicker blade. Either one needs a good sharpening when you get it. I got my brother a USGI to use on his farm, and ground the handle down a bit for comfort and sharpened it razor sharp. The thing was spooky to use at first. I also got him a scabbard for safety.

I suggest the ESEE Lite Machete $50-$60 with a rock solid warranty
