The way I understand it, Japan makes some fantastic steels (VG10, H1 etc.) and they jealously guard their products so Spyderco has to have those knives made in Japan. That said, it is a Spyderco knife so if it was made in Japan then it will be a superb knife and they will have chosen the factory for a specific reason :)

The Native III was made in Japan with VG-10 steel. It is discontinued:
http://spyderco.com/catalog/details.php?product=61

The Native I (which is still available) features S30V steel and is made in the US:
http://spyderco.com/catalog/details.php?product=20

None of them cost $120, even MSRP.

In online stores, the Native I is about half that - and less:

http://www.cutleryshoppe.com/nativeligh ... oedge.aspx
http://newgraham.com/store/product/713/ ... e-SC41PBK/

You can still get the Native III, too:
http://newgraham.com/store/product/740/ ... E-SC78PBK/

I suggest you change your Spydie dealer :D

Dennis

EDIT: Maybe it is a CF Native?!

$120 would be a great price then ;) :

Wow, how new are you? Spyderco make knives in several countries. ;)

It does sound like your dealer is charging you a lot though. I would shop somewhere else and not moan about it on here.

Murdoc listed dealers that you are able to purchase the knife from online for about 50% of the cost of "your" dealer. Read above.

If it's the Native 4, which was made in Japan with carbon fiber scales and VG-10 steel, then that price isn't unreasonable at all. MSRP was $260.

$120 isn't half bad if it's the carbon fiber version. I'm not sure what being made in Japan vs. USA has to do with anything. That said, the VG-10 steel is great and Japan manufactures some of the very best steels in the world. Japan also has a very long history of producing quality cutlery (they got a lot of practice making samurai swords over the course of hundreds of years).

Hmm, something's wrong then - S30V is a US-made steel and wouldn't be stamped from Japan.

Sounds like that's the CF/VG-10 version of the C41 Native. Only other Native made outside the US was the FRN/VG-10 C78 Native III. Either that, or you live somewhere other than the USA.

It is a great knife, but $120 doesn't sound reasonable for me for FRN Native.
Get it from NGK

http://newgraham.com/store/product/713/ ... e-SC41PBK/

It is great dealer, they accept returns, even can inspect the knife before ship.
Call them.
Knife center also good.
Still if this is CF/VG10 Native4, than $120 is a good price. I paid much more for mine.
Good luck.

My top choices Natives5, Calys, C83 Persian

Unreasonable, unbelievable even, since it is above MSRP.

Never heard of anything like that, especially for an "ordinary" Native I which is readily availabe anywhere.

If you want one, get it from one of the dealers I've listed - or somewhere else. They're pretty reasonably priced almost everywhere - ecxept from your dealer ;)

Maybe there was some mistake. I bet it was, since the Native doesn't have a japanese steel blade to begin with. As you stated in your latter post, it features S30V which is US made. Perhaps the dealer read his list wrong :)
