Special orders

#1

Post by jackknifeh »

I've seen several requests by people for specifics on various knives. Does Spyderco ever make just one or what would be the minimum number of knives they would need to make and sell to justify special requests. It may cost more for a special order but I think everyone using this forum is spending what I used to consider rediculous amounts of money for knives. That includes me. I'd like to see Spyderco undertake that type of service. I believe Spyderco would be overwhelmed with orders but the manufacturing process may prohibit this type of service. Now that I think of it this issue has probably been covered.

Spyderco is doing a special order for EDC Forums for the 2010 forum knife. I believe they required a minimum order of 600.

Not a problem. If I get 600 knives I'll never need to sharpen a knife again. Why didn't I think of that before? I'm kidding of course. Are you being serious though? 600? How would that even work?

Spyderco doesn't do custom orders of only one or two knives, as they believe there are plenty of custom knife makers/modders out there who can alter their production pieces to fit your desires. I seem to recall Sal posting about this exact request and saying that Spyderco had no intention to enter this market.

Typically, the only "custom" jobs they do are ones requested by distributors, resellers, etc. The runs I've seen usually vary from 300-600. Some examples are forum knives (EDC Forum Manix 2, Bladeforums blue Native), sprint run distributor specials (Green Alamite Moteng Lums, Pink Manix 2, Knifeworks G10/Ti/M4 Military), exclusively commissioned models for retail companies (Woodcraft Mule, Lone Wolf glock tool Endura), and company sponsored alterations -which also tend to be the smaller runs- (various Q models, engraved logos on various models).

Ok, so that's approximately $60,000 for a 600 piece run of the C95. ;)

Have to start working on that. :D

let me see then:

each forumite can come up with $200 each for a really special knife (more for a lot of us)
so are there 300 of us to buy a knife? i believe so...

300 knives for sale at $200 each equals $60k.
lets us (the hardcore forumites) ask sal to make/design a knife just for us. not a forum knife, a new model made for us, by us. could be done via a sequimite style poll questionaire.

JUST A THOUGHT. it wont happen, but it could!

Then we would have to all get together in Vegas or somewhere, prick our fingers, etc. as a bonding thing since we would have the exact same special order knife which would of course negate the special order reasoning.

Short simple answer - you are not the first to suggest this, by a long shot. It's been discussed at least once a year as long as I've been a member here. Spyderco has consistently said "no thanks" to suggestions they should offer a "Custom Shop" service similar to Buck's. Even if they did, it logic says it would only be available for one, or perhaps two, specific models made in Golden.

Every sprint is made for afi's. Every forum (of the 4+ forums they support) has seen a forum knife or multiple ones. Even regular production is highly affected by our requests/nagging.

I've been here a short time and have still seen a TON of requests go live. Situations not driven by huge profit margins but rather colorful ideas.

IMHO Spyderco already acts like a small batch production house listening to imput. The difference is they front the capital and work out the details that I would screw up. They also produce a staple line of volume pieces for people who want a good tool rather than a book of research.

You guys are all awesome. There is no way I'm going to pitch in $200 and collaborate with a few hundred people. I would be happy with anything but some of you would be fistfighting over orange, FFG and drilled liners. :p . It would be like a Pay-Per-View sporting event.

Depending on what you want, there may also be the option of finding someone to customize an existing Spyderco to suit your tastes. I've done that more than once.

What is a forum knife? Is it a knife that becomes a reality as a result of suggestions from people on this forum? If so that's great. I've seen the term for as long as I've been reading this and never knew what it meant.

Those are beautiful knives but what is it that makes them "forum knives"? I really like the purple native with the web on blade. I doubt that I would buy one though because I wouldn't want to mare the design.

The native is a forum knife because of the blade grind, handle color and the blade etch. Forum knives are always different from the same production model.
We would rather be the knife in your pocket, because is "works" better, than the knife in your showcase, because it "looks" better.

Depends. On some, lke the Lava and Adventura, the only difference was the Forum markings. On others, the difference was marking plus handle color (Vesuvius, Native III and Spyderhawk). Military had the pearl bug inlay and the G-10 Natives were the first use of G-10 on the Native. Last years Forum Native was the first FRN Native with a full flat grind.

Getting 300 of the hardcore people on this forum to agree on all the options out there for a knife....

Good luck with that!! :D
