How big is the Manix 2 really?

#1

Post by prisoner6 »

I am really interested in getting a Manix 2. I don't get to buy a lot of knives, usually one a year or so, so I try to make it a good one.

I'm used to carrying a Caly 3 or UKPK and love the size, but I'm a big guy and could certainly get away with more most of the time.

How beefy is the Manix 2 really compared to the Caly 3? Not just length, but width and heft?

The regular Manix2 is fairly heavy. (4.5 oz?)

The Sprints were about 25% lighter.

You should get one!

Just my opinion......

Will look for a pic in my photobucket.

from a "feel' perspective there is no comparison. The Manix 2 is a great feeling knife, but mind you i don't personally care for the Caly 3 in my hand.

Manix 2 is just more substantial and with all the jimping it just grips my hand alot better.

As for thickness, the Manix 2 is on the right in this picture, if you put a Caly 3 where the knife on the left is, the Manix 2 would be one entire handle slab (liner and scale) thicker.

Ask and you shall receive, Deacon and MCM gave you some awesome photos to compare. The Blue Manix really is an awesome looking knife, too bad they were here and gone all in a few days time. Course nothing wrong with the black or green either.

My black Manix2 is a sweetheart, super beefy and has a really solid feel. A little bit of closed blade play in mine, but rock solid open. It inspires confidence when you hold and use it.

It's a good one, but I do have to recomend the Gayle Bradley if it's within your budget. The Bradley is a super sweet heavy duty folder.

Just my $0.002..........

The Manix 2 (standard) is over 5oz.

Size wise it not small but it fills the hand well and is fairly agile. It's not as cumbersome
as some blades in the same classification yet is still extremely tough.

It's a great jeans knife. It's also a bit mean looking so perhaps not for church bbq's :) .

I'd say get one. I don't think there's a Spyderco that fits my hand quite as well as the Manix 2. The Caly 3 just doesn't fit me, the curves just hit my hand wrong no matter how I hold it. The Manix 2 is great in several grips and I love the look, and lock. Nothing bad to say about the Manix 2, and the black G-10/hollow ground version is one of the best buys on the market today, imo.

greetings,
you couldn't go wrong with the manix2 if you tried. really like my "militarys", really love my manix2. rock solid lock-up, superb fit and finish, excelent EDC [at least for me]. made in america, great materials, [would die for a digi-camo handle] etc, etc. it's a MUST-HAVE spydie. just my humble opinion. good luck.

How big? Just right. As others have commented, this knife fits my hand better than perhaps any other. Plus with all the jimping, it would still feel grippy in gloves. The ergos are stellar, it locks up like a bank vault and the CBBL is far and away the most fun lock to use. I'm going to have to post a video soon of stupid Manix tricks I love playing with this knife so much. How Big is it? Big Enough. :D

Totally agreed.

The Manix2 is amazing in a choil grip or the standard "hard use/tactical" grip. In my hand the Caly3 forces a choil grip and still doesn't give as much confidence. This isn't a knock against the Caly3 but more praise for the M2.

I also don't own a knife that gives me more confidence for HEAVY cutting. Even though it's 154cm and a bit thick, you get the feeling you could chop through a brick house with it. The blade is about as "fixed" as they come once locked-up.

For me the manix 2 is absolutely perfect. Its the perfect size, not too small and if I carry anything much bigger it feels like a waste of space and weight because I know that I wont need a bigger knife to do what my manix can. I carry one of my manix 2's probably about 70% of the time.

Heres a couple more pics,

I would say that the stock version of the Manix seems like quite a bit more knife, while the sprints don't seem to be much of a bother at all. This is because the stock Manix is heavier than most knives while the other ones are the same weight or less than most knives.

If you want a heavier duty knife, the stock version feels very nice.

Someone here once said that the Manix 2 shrinks--I agree wholeheartedly--feels big, feels smaller ie "just right" the longer I carry it. I think it is probably one of the toughest folders ever made by anyone--certainly the toughest for the price that I've ever handled.

I just got my green Manix 2 today and I have to say it is fantastic! I wasn't expecting as dramatic a difference in weight from the original Manix 2. The FFG blade and skeletonized liners really make a huge difference in how it handles and carries. They really skeletonized the heck out of the liners.

I definitely plan to carry this knife. The regular Manix 2 was manageable IMO, but the weight was a bit noticeable. With this one, I can forget I have it in my pocket. But it still seems plenty sturdy. My lock isn't any more stiff than my other Manix 2. I'd say the lock disengagement tension is perfect on both. I can't yet speak about the cutting performance of the XHP steel, but it did come razor sharp out of the box and slices letters open like butter. Great knife!

I don't think the Manix 2 is a particularly big knife (blade is only 3/8" longer than blade of Caly 3), but it is quite a chunky one. Still manages to carry easily, though.

I was able this week to trade into a Manix 2. Very nice! I plan on having Tom Krein do a FFG regrind on it, and then....maybe...I will take it apart and drill out the liners on the drill press...maybe!

I think the width of the Manix 2 closed is wider than most of my other Spydies. IMHO this makes unclipped, deep pocket carry a bit uncomfortable; however, I have no so such problem when it is clipped.
