Spydie for my buddy shipping out with the Navy?

#1

Post by newbuyer »

Hey guys,

My buddy is being stationed in the middle of the Indian Ocean somewhere for a year. Couple of us are chipping in on a knife for him. Price Range of $50-100. Any suggestions? I'd appreciate it. :spyder:

I'd say it has to be one of the Salt range in H1 steel - something that absolutely will not rust :)
My spydies: Squeak, Tenacious, Terzuola, D'Allara, UKPK CF peel-ply pre-production, UKPK CF smooth pre-production, UKPK G10 orange leaf-blade, UKPK FRN grey drop-point, UKPK FRN maroon leaf-blade, Bug ... all PE blades :)

Atlantic Salt. Closest thing to an "Indian Ocean Salt"

That would not be a bad idea. One of the Salt folders would be great.

I tend to tell people to avoid really expensive and unique knives for those deployed in the military. Military life (especially on ships) means there are lots of people who might have access to your stuff and unauthorized using (read "theft") can be an issue.

A Salt 1 might be a good idea.

Salt 1 is a great EDC choice depending on the work your buddy expects to perform. Tazman Salt or Spyderhawk Salt would be nice if rope work is a daily chore. If your buddy is more of a technician then perhaps the Spyderench would be more appropriate. Just tailor the knife choice to how it is expected to be used most often.

I would opt for either the Salt 1 or Pacific Salt. Again, if he does a lot of pull cutting and rope cutting then look at a Tasman.

H1 steel is pretty sweet stuff. Holds a very sharp edge and is rust-proof. If you get him a serrated edge version, then he won't have to worry about sharpening while he's on tour.

I'm thinking he would really like a Pacific Salt.....maybe in all black!

Light, tough, rust-proof and non-reflective.

I think you have a winner :)

Echo--not anything that's so precious it breaks bank if it grows legs (or fins, as the case may be). Any Salt's a good bet.

Any Salt should be perfect. Choose the knife depending on the tasks at hand, either a Tasman, Spyderhawk or Pacific. On a ship, I don't think a fixed blade is really needed.

You could also contact a guy like Mike at River City Sheaths. I think they make a kydex folder sheath for the LEO/white-water folks.

It would be super cool as another carry option and you are saving a bit of cash going with the salt over say a military.
