Took the family to Ontario Place yesterday and had a good time for the Canadian long weekend.

While in a closed area of the park, my Wife and kiddies were in the rest rooms and I used that time to sit and chill.

Two security guards were there doing the same. Like usual I sized them up like I do anyone else and did threat scans of them. Its a habit!

One gent had a funny looking knife in his hand he was using to pick at the rocks and commented on how he can't sharpen it and that he needs a quality knife for work.

These guys are young, out of college, and have no idea about LE equipment. They went on about buying diffeent things for work and where the would wear it on their belts, and what kind of "Rescue" knife they would get.

I couldn't take it anymore.

I interjected into their conversation and mentioned the topic of knives.

Well I had my Tac-Black Pacific Salt on me and a SE Tenacious in the stroller.

I showed them both and explained the culture of EDC and knives as tools.

I had a captured audience. I explained the locking mechanisms, blades styles, and specifically the Spyderco Brand.

Other brands were mentioned by they were really taken by Spyderco.

One of their supervisors came over and we chatted. Once they learned I was a copper things are easy to speak about and comfort levels go up.

Their main concerns were the image of a knife in the public park.

Well.......I explained the Salt Series of knives and particularly the Pacific Salt in Yellow. I also explained that in a crisis or when it is time to act, you cannot trust your life or someone else's to a $10 knife.

The Salt Series, in Yellow fits their role here as first responders, is not threatening, and fits with the water environment.

There were all sold.

I left both my knives with them. They commented about knife carry and legalities. So out came my 13 year old daughter. I asked her what she was carrying ( I already knew).

She one handed from her pocket a Pink Delica. I explained EDC also means educating and responsibility.

No doubt they flicked and played with the knives all night. After the fireworks the one guy got a hold of me on the way out. They went onto a local retailers site that I deal with, and all three of them ordered the Pacific Salt in Serrated, Bright Yellow.

I also referred them to this forum. Maybe we'll see them.

Good work!

Showing LEO's and fellow service folks the way of quality tools is much appreciated. I mostly just dink around with my knives but you guys are saving lives.

In a pinch if you have to cut a seat belt with a pocket knife it should be a quick process. I would want it that way if I were in the drivers seat unconscious. :)

Te way I explain it at work is this.

We spend hundreds of dollars on a firearm and protective equipment. Why would you skimp on a knife that can be used as a tool or to save a life.

I was the same years ago. Buy a knife just because of how it looked or it was cheap. I never got a return on the investment, couldn't sharpen them, and at times, they just did not cut.

Nice work!! That was very nice of you to leave them both with your knives. I have a friend that's still buying Gerbers, Mtechs, and Chinatown knives and he keeps telling me how they break so fast. I have already introduced him to Spyderco a thousand times but he just keeps complaining on how expensive they are. He said to me if his cheap knives break, then he'll just buy another one. Now that my frustration is in over my head, (and I totally understand that you must own just ONE to really appreciate high quality folders and that looking at catalogs can do you no justice..especially for Spyderco's unique designs) I'm gonna buy him a Delica 4 for his birthday coming up soon. Hopefully I'll be able to recruit another Spyderco addict!

Btw, your daughter is badass :D

Thanks for sharing.

Great story. :)

I was like, "Wow, left the knives with them?!" then, "Oh, awesome! It's being put to good use. :D "

I didn't see that coming at all. :o

Ill be going back on company time on Friday to get the knives back. Ive already got a long winded email from one of the guys. So many questions I just told him to post and search here.

I know who they are, where they work, so it wouldn't be hard to track them down.

You know they just went back and told everyone that they work with about the coolest guy ever.

I hope you shared with them the part about addiction, little do they know they are about to find themselves wanting more and more.

Found it funny that you sized up 2 security guards sitting on a park bench :D

I size up everyone no matter where I am.

Hand first, pockets, then the rest.

Why hands? And do you check the pocket for knives, etc?

Hands are the delivery system for assaults. Pockets for bulges or clips.
