In the Army I was a "straight legger"

( infantry ) but knew alot of airborne dudes

that were at a loss for a proper "jump knife"

( this was 1983 ). There was the old Schrade

"switchblade" ( which predictibly failed ),

how about a <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> "Jumpmaster" along the dimensions of the Calypso Jr. ? FRN handles,

lockback, with two note worthy additions :

a manual curved hook at the rear of the knife

that folds ( for undoing rigging, etc. ) and

serrations not on the blade, but along the

first 3/4" of the top ( from tip to mid-section ). I think alot of Airborne grunts

would clamour for such a god send !

sounds like your asking for a mariner type of knife with a marlin spike not a bad idea if it could be marketed to the grunts a sailors /yachtsmen who knows maybe even rock climbers

When I was in the Air Force during the late sixties, I got the old style pilots knife.

It had both a switchblade (whick had failed) and a J shaped blade. The inside of the J shaped blade was the sharpened edge.

As a practical tool, I was not very impressed, but it was cool looking.

The J blade was used on a very old style parachute.

However, I'm very intrigued with the thought of a Mariner/Rescue knife with a Marlin Spike. It's definately worth investigating.

One way or the other, you pay for your tools!

That seems like an excellent idea. Judging from appearances, the Camillus switchblade looks overly fragile. A short blade, a switchblade mechanism which may fail, and a shackle on the master blade end all add up to a knife most would avoid.

A purpose-built <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> may be the exact answer.

Keepin' it real...real sharp, that is.

You can count me in for a <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> with a J-hook for cutting away rigging. How about with bright green scales like the Jester??? A Marlin spike wouldn't really be practical for a jump knife.

I believe I was mis-read ; not a "marlin spike" ,but the "J-shaped blade". And the
serration(s) would be on whats technically
called the "blade spine" ( making this a double edge? ). Nonetheless better than ANY

I was a paratrooper in '86. I was not a jumpmaster but my roommate was. He and most of the other jumpmasters had Buck 110's and the Airforce pilot survivel knife. One thing to note was that you were not allowed to jump with a fixed blade knife unless it had some sort of metal protection on the bottom of the sheath. I don't know if they would allow kydex today. Oh yea, I carried a fully serrated spyderco delica (AUS-8A).

Kydex is currently considered jump-safe, though leather is not. It seems that Kydex is strong enough that it is nearly impossible to pierce.

Excellent ideea ATE. I was just wondering what will it be my next dream spydie design. It will take some time,though... But I like challenges.

Have always admired the MOD Dieter CQD since its introduction and as an EMT believed it had great value as a rescue knife. I have not seen it evaluated as a PJ or Jumpmaster knife but perhaps the integral cutter has merit in a future <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>co design. The striker is cool too.

As an ex AF maintainer I found the old PJ/Survival folders unreliable but always liked the looks of the J-Blade.

The other thing is this : the blade, having serration(s) on the spine, would be availible only in PE ( i.e. the cutting edge )
How about a "marblized" camo pattern handle?
Or, safety orange for the EMT's in the audience? <img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> I really think the armed forces
would jump at a knife like this, not to mention the weekend parachutists out there &
