What is the best Spyderco for the outdoors?
What is the best Spyderco for the outdoors?
I already have the perfect EDC, so now I need a good outdoor folder for the times I can't carry a fixed blade. In your opinion, what is the best outdoor Spyderco knife?
Please explain why your suggestion is the best.
Thanks!!!!

Ummmm.. Let's see.. Here's a starting order..
1) Military - excellent all-rounder!
Built tough! <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>
2) Wegner - This discontinued baby packs
plenty if you hunt a lot!
3) Catcherman - AWES<img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>ME fillet knife!
I never leave home without
this
4) Moran DP and SP - The camp knife that
ROCKS!
I also pack my Endura as back-up. Depending on what you need, I personally felt that Spyderco had most outdoor sports covered!

For general outdoors EDC, perhaps the <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> Endura, either plain edge or combo edge.<img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

Another vote for the Military.
It's strengths are :
The back is mostly open, so you can flush water through for quick cleaning.
The G-10 handle has a very egonomic shape so it is rock stready in the hand.
The CPM-440v blade is an excellent steel, also the flat grind is an excellent all rounder.
It has an oversized opening hole, so if your hands or the knife are covered in goop it is still easy to open.
Be warned the Military is a big brute of a knife. If you want something smaller hold out for the upcoming Tracker. If it is anything like the Ocelot prototype it will be a sure fire winner. All the features of the Military but in a smaller package, with a compression lock and a stronger tip.
There's a hole in the sky where the rain comes in, it's a very small hole that's why rain's so thin - In memory of the Goons

If your traveling light...i'd suggest the native in partial SE.and FR handle... but i usually add a larger folder as a rule..the endura in plain edge and stainless steel is a work horse u cant beat..(hates the thought of scratchin those nice green scaleson my lum chinese)..1 knife that surprised me for its looks on paper befor i bought it..was my paragon XO lite...it looks wimpy in photos but trust me it's a huge knife and built like a tank... cant go wrong with any spyderco in a larger pattern.....Ron

I'd suggest the Starmate. Its not currently being produced, so it would be a great "outdoor" knife, as well as a collector's item.
Whatever you decide, make sure it has the <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> on it!

Tightwad- almost all of the above. Outdoors as in yardwork, hunting (especially deer), camping, up at the cabin on the lake, on the water, swamps, snowy terrain in the winter, and deer camp (deep in the woods).
Anything but the city <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>
Thanks for all of the replys, the Military sounds like a winner. I have seen it many times and I really like the look of it. I just have one question- does the handle flex when gripped tight?

Ah, no worries mate! This is one tough knife. Although the Military is a rather slim knife, it is by no means a weak knife. I'd honestly be floored if I ever meet a person that could get a G-10 handled knife to "flex" by just gripping it. This is a awesome material, this G-10. Just don't be fooled by the light-weightness of the knife. Its a sure winner to be sure!<img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

Hey K man :
Try the C39S&PBK "Dyad Jr." ; if you are a traditionalist at heart ( such as in dads old
two blade ) then the Dyad jr. is for you. Sits nicely in the pocket and has the one hand opening that made <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> famous! The
blade(s) are not too small, yet not too large
<img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> and you'll actually have two knives in
one : one straight edge, one serrated edge.
This pkg will set you back about $50 compared
to the mili at $100+, and it's compact size
will not draw undue attention from the authorities. Check it ( Dyad jr. ) out.

K man,
For heavy-duty outdoor use, the Chinook is hard to beat. It's a very tough knife. The Military goes well with it, particularly if food preparation is needed. You most certainly need one of each. The Wegner is also very strongly built, and a dream to use. I guess I'm no help at all.
