Coming Soon??

Can we get a "Coming Soon" sticky???

I see the "New Product Announcement" thread up there, but it doesn't give any warning. All of a sudden BAM, something is released, and many are unprepared and miss out. Especially on Sprint Runs and Forum Knife releases.

I'm not asking for a set date on releases, because I know Sal doesn't want to make any empty promises. But come on, if a batch of Para2's are finished and ready to ship, atleast a heads up that "very soon" it will be released, would be nice.

Anyone else agree? :)

I completely agree.

I would like to see release windows. Like "Para 2 coming [spring/summer/fall/winter] 2010." With manufacturing and shipping, it's completely possible that Spyderco expects some knives to be done before others but find out that the opposite happens. Maybe Sal could share some wisdom on this?

Or if they could simply send a prototype version of each knife to me 2 weeks prior to release (for private testing, of course), I would be happy to drop the rest of you guys a hint that it is coming soon.

Sounds like a good idea.

Nope, unless Blerv works for Spyderco and knows when upcoming releases are ready for shipping, that's not what I was thinking of.

And neither of those threads were used days before any recent releases, so no not them.

So you are looking for an "official" This knife is 2 weeks out kind of thread??

I get that but watching these forums for inklings that new things are coming is a lot of fun (at least it is for me). Very few things show up completely out of the blue and when they do, it's a fun surprise. I vote "no thanks". But that's just me...

IIRC, Sal or Kristie usually give a "Heads Up" thread when a new product is about to drop. I can assume that they are just too busy to keep posting about new products dropping. I kind of like the surprise of sudden knives coming out.

I do think a "Heads Up" Sticky would be a great idea.

Great idea. Most manufactures do this and also if it is a limited production run those numbers should be available to the consumer.

I am with Ken on this one. Sure, sometimes I would love to know when a new model is set for release, but the surprise aspect is quite fun. :)

For those of you that are collectors and have to buy every new knife that is released or every variation, etc. are you notified in advance what knives are coming soon so you can be prepared?

Wouldn't we ALL like that? I don't think Sal has enough time to make several thousand prototype :spyder: for the forum :D however, the forum knife is something that could be done as such. :p

That's fine, as long as there are enough for everyone to get one with no problems.

If there were enough for everyone, people would not want them. ;)

A few random observations...

Anything that tips those with a genuine interest in acquiring a single specimen of a new Sprint Run knife for their personal use that its arrival is imminent will also tip off the hoarders/speculators. Net result may be fewer pieces in the hands of users.

No matter how clear a disclaimer is posted saying the information is an estimate, folks will get even more upset if a posted date is missed by more than what they personally consider a "reasonable" amount of days, weeks, or months. It happened often enough in the past to make Spyderco stop posting anything until a knife was actually in transit to the dealers.

I doubt a totally reliable way to know when a knife will ship until it gets through QC has been discovered, or will ever be. On knives made outside of Golden, shipping delays and errors, Customs delays, and internal workload at Golden can all slow that process down. On those made in Golden, delays in delivery of raw materials, problems with production equipment, and availability of manpower, can do the same.

We are, to a large degree, spoiled children. Instead of being grateful for Sal's incredible openness with us about so many thing most companies would consider private business, we instead expect even more transparency.

Kristi is currently so busy it takes weeks for new members here to get activated. That's not a complaint. Considering the fact she does most, if not all, of the forum work on her own time we, and Spyderco, should be thankful for her presence. But adding yet another time-sensitive task to that might just be the straw that breaks the camel's back.

Folks who want the best possible shot at Sprints have several options.

The new structure of the Collectors Club makes guaranteeing yourself one less expensive than it use to be and the timely shipping of the numbered knives makes it easier to dispose of those you don't wish to keep without taking too much of a beating.

Then there's always the old standby - find one dealer and patronize them as exclusively as possible. Just ask yourself who a dealer is more likely to put at the top of the list for a low volume/high demand knife, the stranger who calls in first, or the regular customer. I'd rather hope it's the regular customer, loyalty should be a two way street.
