Which is the best of these? I respect the opinions of those here greatly, so I thought I'd ask. I know it's not knife related directly, but you know it could be. In any case, I think I need one.

Of course, I'm incredibly spoiled by my LED lights. Surefires just eat up batteries way too fast. I don't think there's an LED equivalent of a Surefire yet, but getting yourself a good LED light (either supplementary, when you can use it INSTEAD of wasting Surefire batteries, or even as a main light) might be a thought.

There is a new Surefire model called the Aviator coming out soon (hopefully). It has 3-5 LEDs in the bezel. 2 123 batteries. Info at www.candlepowerforums.com. You have to register and sign in but it is worth it. Everything you would want to know about flashlights. I have an M2... and an M900A- but that's another story!

All surefires do the trick for me. I have a 6P and now I can't use any other.

I've had a Surefire 6R and a 6P for many years. The 6R is nice for its rechargable battery and by removing the spacer it can use 123 lithium batteries. The 6P with the hipower P61 bulb is a blinding little handfull. I only use it intermittently sweeping the path ahead of me and the batteries last me thru a camping trip. I let the wife use it and she cranks the cap down and the batteries don't last her thru the night.

Here is a comparison between the AA Minimag and the Surefire E2. In actuality there is even more difference than it shows in the picture. The AA has an improved bulb butt can't even come close to the quality and intensity of the Surefire.
The closest thing is probably the Streamlight Scorpion as Spyderholic mentioned. (almost as good and its cheaper)

I looked at the Surefires and Streamlight when I was shopping for a light. Surefire is probably the best, but my Scorpion does everything I need. If I used/carried it more I would go with the Surefire. It would be better for heavy duty use.

I have a Surefire M2 myself, doesn't get much better than that.. but it really depends on what the intended use of the light is. For use with a handgun, the M2 is tops, some might find it a little large for everyday carry. The new aviator (high intensity _and_ led for when you just need a little light) is the state of the art.

Thank you all for the excellent information. Before I even checked back here today I found myself at "the shop". This is my new name for the local Spyderco dealer here...you know, the one that gets all my money. Anyway, they had two of the rechargeable, top-dollar larger Surefire models there and a few different Streamlight models. The one I found irresistable was the Streamlight Scorpion, so by the time I left it was in my pocket. It is impressive and was very reasonably priced.

I may find these type of lights so much fun that I will be driven to acquire a Surefire model in time, but for now this one looks to be great! It is the compact model with the "tactical" switch in the back end. An all aluminum body with rubber coating on the main length, with a spare bulb stored inside. Quite slick. I am looking forward to trying it out tonight on my late night "patrol" of the neighborhood. This is what my wife calls it when I go out for an evening walk all "geared up". Now I just have to decide which Spydie to take with me...

Man is this thing (Streamlight Scorpion) bright! I'm used to a mini-maglite and this is not at all in the same class. Thanks again for all your help.
