Hey guys I went to a local pawn shop today not expecting to find much but found this little guy sitting beneath the glass. From some searching I know it's a Toad. Can you guys share some info on it. What year it was made? When was it discontinued? Was it a popular model? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks

Introduced in '99, in the catalog until '02. Original MSRP was $105. Handle is Almite coated aluminum. There's some collector interest, but it's fairly far down on the popularity list.

Check out Custom Tacticals Video reviews on Youtube, he has a great review on your exact knife.

His reviews are good, he is a well spoken guy and has a vast colleciton of customs and production knives.

I almost always bid on those when they hit ebay. I've yet to win. Great find.

FYI I saw one at a gun show a few months back and the lady wanted $125 for it. So that gives you a ballpark figure.

Nice score!

did the pawn shop owner even know what it was...or did you get a fairly good deal on it?

It's kinda of funny really. I walked in the shop and the kid behind the counter asked what I was looking for. I said pocket knives. He showed me the display were the knives were and asked if I was looking for anything in particular. I said I was a fan of Spyderco knives and he said " Oh those strange looking little knives". :D After the info you guys gave me I guess I got a deal. I payed $45 for it.

Good score! :)

Most I have seen go from just over $100 to much higher.......
I have seen silly high prices paid for these in mint cond.
Your mileage may vary........

Anyone else have Toad box photos to post?
Is this the same box that was used all three years?

That's the box mine came in.

I was commenting on primm77's score. That was a Great find / price!

I paid about retail as I recall. :)

We need to get forum member "Toad" on this thread. Am sure he could add value to the subject!

Have to think that, like the Q's, some of them came in the smaller boxes and some in the larger ones like MCM's. Don't have proof, don't own a Toad anymore and can't even recall if the one I owned had a box or not. But Spyderco has a habit of using whatever is handy, I've seen burgundy micarta Jesters in tiny, small, and large boxes - all properly labeled. Have had Kiwis arrive in both small and large grey boxes as well.

Like the Deacon said, there was more variability back in the white box days. I have some little knives in big boxes and the same model also in a little box. I know the box goes with the knife because each has the "official" labeling to match the knife.

Anyhoo, back in the day, a lot of folks used to say how ugly the Toad was. If anyone had to kick a puppy it would be the Toad, if they wanted to talk about ugly. I've always really like the Toad. It has a very organic flow to the handle and the blade always makes me think of some sort of cigar cutting blade. A neat little gent's knife with enough heft and thickness to the handle to give most hands an easier grip to use than many of the micro knives out there today. Nice find.

Of the pics I have handy, this shows that the Toad came around the time of the box transition to the grey box, also a larger box.
