1st Byrd - wow!

So my niece was looking for a knife for her boyfriend and didn't have a lot of $$. I suggested we look at Byrds. After a bit online, she really liked the SS Byrd Cara Cara in CE. So we ordered and got it for less than $20, shipping included.

It arrived yesterday and I have to say that the word is...stunned.

I knew it would be a "good" knife being a Spyderco, but it was all out of proportion for any $20 knife. No play, super sharp, SE portion is Spyderco through and through. No tool marks, nothing...literally flawless. Flicked open and locked sure and solid.

I felt like I was handling a much more expensive Spydie. To all involved, this is a great knife and I will definitely have some Byrds on my list. In fact I put in a request for a cara cara for my birthday.

Dear AH2525:

I'm glad you are so pleased with your Byrd knife. I had the same reaction when I received my first one, but what was really amazing to me was the reaction of the guys who attended my Martial Blade Camp back in August. We had 40+ hard-core knife geeks from as far away as Japan come to train. To a person, they were blown away by the quality of the Byrd knives that Spyderco was kind enough to donate as an event sponsor. Many of them are now huge fans of the Byrd line and consider them perfect low-cost "starter" pieces for people new to knives and the ideal gift for the brother-in-law whom you don't like enough to give a real Spydie.

The word is out: Give people the Byrd!

Stay safe,

Mike

I can't say enough about my G10 Meadowlark. Love the thing. Holds an edge really well. Bought a Cara Cara for a friend and a Crossbill for another. They all love the Byrds. Great knife and awesome value.

Oh, man, that's priceless. :D

I was quite impressed with the ones I got, too. I thought they were a bit heavy, though. An absolutely amazing value, however. Much higher quality than I expected at that price.

The SS Byrds are surprisingly well made.I own a SS Flight.Crossbill, and Pelican. They all lock up tight as a bank vault and the finish is very nice.if you put a little better blade steel and a round hole in the blade people wouldn't even be able to tell from the standard Spyderco line.Don't get me wrong 8CR takes a nasty edge and holds it well enough! :D

Got a Robin PE with SS handles for my uncle's birthday this week, and I must say I'm quite impressed. The finish was flawless, no blade play, great ergos even for someone with fairly big hands like myself. The only thing I didn't quite like was that it didn't have that great factory edge I've come to expect from Spyderco. It was way better than the Benchmade 556 I bought a while ago (which was rather dull and not quite perfectly profiled), but not as sharp as I'd like it to be. Fixed that up with a run on the Sharpmaker, so it's good to go ;)

The Robin with my own present, a Sage 1 :)

Nice to see that photo of the Robin.
I'm expecting one just like it as a Christmas gift from my wife.
Hope I get it. :D

Well done. I WILL have one of those with a tsunami as soon as I can get an evening alone with my Dremel and belt sander.

Tsunami = big wave. Quite a few people have cut part of the Spyder Hole out of their knives to make them function like an Emerson Wave. I have Cara Cara Rescue that I have never carried because I wasn't excited about the sheepsfoot but your wharncliff looks great.

My girlfriend gave me the byrd :D lol She brought me a Robin back from SFO when she went. MAN I was impressed with it! Still am! I have used it quite a bit and it still cuts paper with incredible ease. VERY high quality especially for the price!

I personally have a Firebyrd, a SS PE Cara Cara, a G10 PE Robin and a CE Crow. All very well built - I am quite impressed with the fit, finish, overall usability and quality of each, and for the price, I don't think I could do better anywhere (occasional steals on spydies notwithstanding). I am certain that I will end up picking up more over time - at the price I have gotten them at, they were often just right to top off a :spyder: order. :D

Thanks - you should do it. It's a very useful blade shape, even on a big knife.
