Black Blades and Engraving

#1

Post by FIMS »

For a Christmas gift to myself because I have been so good this year, I am thinking of getting the Black bladed Endura and Delica 4's CE, and possibly the same in the Native model.

These will be carried at work and match my uniform very well and frankly stand out from everyone else's knives.

I do however want to engrave my Name/Badge on the blades.

What will engraving do to the black coated blades?

Will the engraving be crisp and clean or will it chip as if engraving on a painted surface?

Anyone done this with pics available?

If you have the engraving done by Spyderco, it will look just like the laser marking done by the factory. I fact I'm picking up a black Native on Friday that is being 'engraved' by the nice folks in Golden. So your name/badge # will have the same clarity and properties as the bug and other lettering on the blade.

Laser engraving

Laser engraving on black blades actually looks really nice. The contrast makes the text really stand out.

Having it done by Spyderco is a really nice option I was not aware of and would guarantee quality work.

We have not laser etched any black blade Spydercos yet (we've done plenty of non-black ones), and we've done plenty of black blade knives from other manufacturers that have turned out really nicely.

I plan to do a spiderweb black blade delica for myself when I get some free time (when is that again?)

Here's a black blade pic of a recent batch we did to give you some idea of how it stands out.

I didnt count on laser etching because I have no idea who does it around here. But from talking with others, laser etching actually isnt as far fetched as it seems. I think local trophy shops might do it.
