Ebay Horror Story

#1

Post by Freediver »

Well folks,

This is the first time I am ever doing this but I am honestly SHOCKED at what Spydieguys did to me. I chose to ignore that mess he got himself into on the forum and decided to bid on his knife because he seemed like a reputable dealer. I won a Pacific Salt on September 23rd. I waited all week and never heard from them. On September 30th I get this:

Hello, sorry but we have not yet received your item from our supplier, please
let me know if you want me to go ahead and give you a refund. Once again
sorry for the inconvenience.
Thanks,
Griselda

I sent them 3 emails saying just refund me and they never responded. Finally I get an email saying the item was shipped on 10/2. I send them a message this time (on ebay, which I should have done with the other 3 but I figured they would respond to an email I clicked respond to) and they claim they never got those emails.

Fine... the knife is on the way... right? I get the package today and my surprise its a SALT - I (the WRONG knife, I bought a Pacific Salt) with finger prints all over it and a smashed box. I am shocked they would do this. I am not even sure what I have to do now. I sent them a message and I am waiting to hear back. I guess if they don't respond I have to go to Paypal. How disappointing. I almost think they did it on purpose because I sent them an angry email after they sent it out when I said not to.

That's very strange, as Spydieguys seems to be a reputable dealer. Sorry to hear about your difficulty. I hope everything works out.

Unfortunately, this does not seem to be an isolated incident. If you scrutinize the ebay feedback of the dealer in question, you will see similar narratives... including written within the positive feedback section.

I'm just gonna throw my .02 cents in on this one. I used to manage a store that sold goods for other people on eBay and I've seen a lot of stuff happen. 1st off, the finger prints on the knife are probably just from opening it and checking to make sure all is well. We had to check every item that went out of our store and sometimes it required us opening the box to make sure their were no problems with anything. When your pushing out a ton of product you don't have a chance to wipe down every little detail. I do understand where your coming from that it is a tad disappointing. On the smashed box, well that is just from shipping it in a bubble envelope. Technically not much can be done to the seller because there is no proof it was actually him. The chances of it being the delivery people is greater. Your best bet is to just see if SpydieGuys will do anything about it. PayPal probably won't be able to help you with a smooshed box issue.

I do understand the feeling of receiving something in that condition. Next time just make sure your seller is sending it in a real cardboard box because the bubble envelopes don't always cut it.

I have to agree the smashed box is most likely by the post office. They've done worst to some of my packages.

I don't care about a smashed box and finger prints. I care that it was out of stock for a week even though it's up on ebay as an auction (it should be in hand), they ignored my emails to refund my cash after they offered it... and more importantly I received the WRONG knife. I bought a Pacific Salt and I received a Salt I. That's a cheaper, smaller knife.

I bought something from Spydieguys one time. They sent me the right product, at least. However, I paid 6 bucks for shipping. Item showed up in an envelope with a label that showed they paid less than 2 bucks for 1st class. On top of all that, it arrived POSTAGE DUE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Even if the envelope cost a buck, I still paid 3 bucks more than it cost to send the knife and they didn't put enough postage on it. Having to dig in my change jar to get my knife in my hand and the mailman off my porch set me on the path to other internet dealers.

Yeah, it takes more time and effort to put things in boxes instead of envelopes. One would think that Spydieguy might make that extra effort when they know that a lot of their customers are Spyderco collectors who would like their items to arrive in the best shape possible. Oh, and making sure the right knife is in the box always helps.

Your experience is pretty strange. I have bought half a dozen knives from them in the last couple of months. They have always been fast, accurate and communicated profusely.

Certainly they need to get you the correct knife, but I believe the fingerprints is a minor issue and the smashed box is probably not their fault. Beside those are mute points because they need to replace the knife.

Give them a chance, I'm sure he'll correct the situation.

Next time try Knifeworks. They check for me each time I ask to make sure an item is in stock before I place my order. Any questions? They are more than ready to answer them. Their customer service is great!

I bought one Spyderhawk from them, and then when I got a situation almost the same as yours corrected, I went back and bought another from them based on my previous experience with them. And they ship fast too!

My second Spyderhawk should be here in the morning!

I'm going to second the quick shipping from knifeworks. I placed my order around 4pm and had a tracking number by 6pm. Talk about quick!

Generally speaking, what I HATE is why people send boxes in envelopes. They are guaranteed to get smashed! I dont mind if Im buying from one of you guys on the forum where it's not your job or profession, but when dealers do it, it kind of pisses me off. I got a knife for my brother to introduce him to Spydies off eBay and the box was totally smashed. I had to tape it back together - and it looked like crap when I gave it to him. I ended up giving it to him before bday so I could be present to explain the box (and how to open/close it :rolleyes :) . We pay all this for shipping and get a smashed box. (Of course, I didnt used to care until I saw many folks here keeping and storing their Spydies in the boxes :D ).

Go to Knifeworks.com. Their customer service is top-notch, they have competitive prices, a great selection and speedy delivery. It's my preferred online knife shop.

Most definitely. This is not a seller-specific issue. Spyderco does contribute to the problem by packing their knives in what can only be described as flimsy boxes. Both the Post Office and common carriers occasionally manage to crush shipping cartons. But, when all is said and done, it is still the dealer's responsibility to pack merchandise in such a way as to minimize the risk of damage. Envelopes, even padded ones, are just not an acceptable way to ship Spyderco knives unless both parties to the sale have agreed in advance that the box is unimportant. Any Spyderco, even the most common, may have been purchased for a collection or as a gift.

The Paypal problem resolution process starts with sending the seller an email which is identified as part of Paypal problem resolution. This should get the seller's attention.

I bought a pair of Nikon binoculars and received a different model worth half as much. The Seller never responded to my emails, both before and after going into problem resolution. I got a full refund.

He never got back to me so I put in a claim. I'm going to send the knife back right now with delivery confirmation. While going through his feedback I see that the same exact thing happened a few days ago to someone else, and that he was unresponsive, so they had to put in a paypal claim and won it. I left him a negative feedback, which is the first I ever left in my life. I felt bad, but at the same time the whole transaction was nothing but negative, and now I'm going to be out money shipping it back to him, on top of having to order the knife somewhere else.

Honestly I'm usually patient with stuff like this but I was just pretty upset after it took them a week to tell me they didn't have it in stock (it's an Ebay auction, you should have the item in hand, not to mention he immediately re-listed the same auction) and then when they offered me a refund they ignored my 3 emails that said "yes" and sent it anyways. Then obviously, the best part is they sent me the wrong knife after all that.

The part about the smooshed box almost made it comical at the the time. Here I was all excited opening up the knife and it slides out of a little padded envelope all flattened and I'm wondering why the box is so small, and out pops a Salt I instead of the Pacific. At that point it just seemed like a cruel practical joke.

Freediver,

Bad enough we have to endure extra shipping charges to the islands, but treatment like that is unwarrented. Especially from a forum member. If I recall, isnt the spydieguys, guy, a forum member? If so, why isnt he reponding to at least your emails, let alone chiming into this thread to clarify why you were ignored, then mis-served. The fingerprints, and box, I can understand. But like you said, you paid for a pac-salt (great knife by the way, good on ya mate) and got a salt 1. Put that together with piss poor communication and I would be furious. I feel your pain.
PM me if this all falls apart on you, and ebay or spydieguys dont make it right. Maybe we can work out a trade for my gently used Pac-Salt and another used knife of yours. Or something. Hawaiians gotta stick together!
Donovan.
The bitterness of poor quality lingers long after the sweetness of meeting deadlines is forgotten.
