polishing peel ply carbon fiber

#1

Post by VashHash »

so i have another s90v manix2 coming in monday and i was thinking about the one i'll soon be EDCing the peel ply is nice but i was wondering if it'd be possible to polish the texture out of the carbon fiber and make it smooth and shiny of course i'd have to use varying grits to get it really fine and smooth but i'm just wondering if it's possible and if anyone has any experience with it i do some of my own customizations when i can't get what i want but i've never worked with CF before i was thinking either a dremel or go the hand route probably the hand route for better control and cosistency what are your thoughts on this has anyone done it before i just think it'd make the knife more dressy either way i'd wear it with a suit just think it'd be cool to have it smooth

Be careful. Carbon fiber is one thing you do not want to inhale. Make sure you use a good exahust system and a mask when working with it.

yeah i'm usually pretty careful just i dunno how well it would finish up i would think the resin would help keep it uniform so it wouldn't fray and would also make it possible to get to a high polish just i've never done it before

Peel ply CF will polish up like any other CF. Take it to 1500 grit paper, then move to a polishing paste. Automotive paint "medium cut" should work fine.

If you don't want to deal with the dust issue, wet sand!

I am thinking about doing the same thing with #2 next week.
Semi melt-down, polished CF. The only thing holding me back is I have never disassembled this style lock.

I have done this a few times now, I tear down the knife, put a piece of
wet & dry 3M sandpaper on a sheet of glass, cover with water and work in a figure 8. You might want to start with 320 grit to knock it down. Higher polish, just go to higher numbered paper. The Mili below went to 600 after coarser paper. Just remember to keep it wet. (so you don't breath CF dust)
Here is a photo of the 1st one I attempted last year. Have made Mule scales as well. CF is tough, but not too difficult to work with at all.

Now, to tear down a perfect caged ball lock or not?
That is the question....

Polished CF is grippy enough for most jobs.
Gutting fish? No.........

It looks great + I like the way my Mili slips easilly in and out of my pocket.

You guys should bear in mind that on the Manix 2 that lanyard tubing is actually holding the back of the liners together, so it is clamped pretty hard and although I think it can be removed pretty easily, I wonder how you are going to clamp it back on without damaging it...

Agree, not sure if it was pressed, flaired etc.
On mine one side looks to be staked in 2 tiny spots.
Cant see it in the photo, but here it is.....

lol it's just a thought i dunno exactly how i'm gonna do it yet but i don't think sal will make a knife just for me maybe we should try and get another sprint manix 2 with smooth cf but hey sal i wouldn't mind ;) i'm also thinking of buying a perfectly good manix 2 154cm and taking it to a grinder to make a trainer sometimes you just can't buy what you want and you have to make it thanks for the input though i'll give it some thought before i do it i dunno how to take the lock apart though a regular bbl would prolly be easier but i can learn i'm sure i can always try the regular manix 2 first so if i **** it up i can easily get another yeah it might be costly but if you want it bad enough who cares how much it cost right
